Not to mention, they don't have to sign at all until next summer.
- Jocelyn26

Neither side wants to go into a lame-duck season, but what does that have to do with anything?

Sure it does Sage.

Open market . . . someone would find the coin to pay those guys! And likely north of that amount (if, in fact, that IS the number).

And you dont?

I'm just not going to deal with guys whining if they sign north of 10.....they don't care about winning or they'd have taken 8.5 or god knows what else.

It's stupid. The job of balancing the roster is on bowman. Not pat brisson and Kane and Toews.

- SteveRain

That's fair. I'll make my gripe with guys whining about not trading for Kesler, Spezza or signing Stastny.

Whether they sign for 9 or 10+ they need to get rid of one of those (core) players/salaries not add one.

I have no problem with them making as much as they can. If that's all they want and the cap doesn't go up that much they shouldn't have any issue playing with a combo of farmhands and journeymen in the bottom 6.

Clete Boyer here. That was before I got the bug to be a catcher.

Willy Miranda here, I think.

If it's $10.8, that's probably:

$9.0 increase for the boys
Another $3.0 for Saad and Kruger

If the cap goes up by 5% (as apparently Bettman is suggestin) that's $3.5

Hawks would have to shed $8.5 of NET salary over this summer and next.

Sharp and Oduya and Leddy and Roszival?

Sharp and Seabrook?

And it's all more complicated than that.

Blue line could be decimated.

- StLBravesFan

If it's 10.8 the Players Assoc. will be thrilled...that new high water mark will mean salaries will get crazier and crazier going forward.

So when's the next lockout?

They are worth every penny and it's their call. Not going to chastise them if they do I would hope others don't play the money card and how they don't need it or don't care about winning or god knows what else. It's pathetic and old.
- SteveRain

Yes they are worth it as they are elite players.Top guys who the fans come to see should be paid. The problem is the big money spent on the second tier and on down the line.Bolland 5.5 million as an example, why should the stars subsidize the over paid middle?

Logan - single in the 13th.

Aaron - walk, Logan to second.

Adcock - home run, but he passed Aaron on the bases and got credit for a double.

Earl Gillespie and Blaine Walsh did a nice job on the radio.

- StLBravesFan

I recall someone got on with a Don Hoak error. Earl and Blain were really good.

it's bleak. No question about it and again that's on Bowman. His job to plan long term and have suitable replacements ready.

It is what is and i just don't want to read 40 pages of idiocy when the deals come out.

In the early '60's if you lived around Toronto there was one local TV station (Channel 6 CBC) and 3 stations in Buffalo.

Remember watching a playoff game as a kid about 1962 from the Stadium. Scoreless thru 2 periods and then the Hawks scored on Johnny Bower halfway thru the 3rd. Crowd littered the ice with so much stuff it must have taken 15 minutes to clear up. During that time the crowd sang "Hail, Hail the gang's all here" in unison. Never saw anything like it.

And then Richardy Duff scored 2 quickies to win it in the last 10 minutes of the game.

- RickJ

Took me a couple of minutes. I was wondering who the hell that was.

Those ships have sailed. I'm sure bowman is laying out all.of that as a deterrent to a higher aav.

There is really no win here for the Hawks in regards to the cap. Keeping both for years is a huge win but roster flexibility is another story.

Loved the Santo glove. It was sweet. Traded a broken down 1st baseman glove for it. Was a steal.

Not a coincidence brisson wanted to wait post 7/1 to what the market brought.

Salaries have nothing to do with the lockout. These owners do it to themselves. Stupid money to non star players. Maybe they should lock out their gms?

They won't play a year without a contract: the chances of a career ending injury (how many more concussions can Toews take) is too great.

And I'm not sure it would be that sure they would get more on the open market: that's a lot of money in a hard-cap league.

I'd be fine with 10.8 per year for the Wonder Twins, I was expecting between $10.5-$11 mil per year for each of them.

How is it a huge win if the team isn't able to compete?

They are under contract, Sage. The team isn't obligated to resign them a year in advance.

I know - but the Hawks certainly don't want them going lame-duck - too much uncertainty, distraction, etc. - and I doubt that the players do either - same reasons, plus the lack of protection agains a career ending injury.

That's what I meant by "without a contract".

For real? 2 Marque marketable winners entering their prime? You have arguably the best Canadian born player and american born player in the game on your team.

All the sponsors, etc and season ticket waiting list and god knows what else.

Again you want to blame somebody blame bowman. He should have seen this coming for years. His job to make all the pieces work.

Some of it is the cap floor. The bottom feeders need to reach the floor so they have to spend a lot on average players. Like Tallon a few years ago spending a lot on guys like kopecky

Tried googling prices. Came up empty. The really sucked in the 50's according to the stories I was told.
- Elbows15

I Went with my older brother in 1957 during a Saturday afternoon game. Mezzanine tkt cost my older brother $ 5.00 each. They still had chicken wire around the rink instead of plexiglas. In 1962 the cost of 2nd balcony seats around the bend were about $ 5.00 and standing room seats( which I had cost $ 1. 50 ) . By 1964 the same seats doubled up to $ 3.00. The Hawks had full houses by 1964.

They shouldn't. If some gm pays bolland 5.5 or somebody offered stasny over 8 million that's not on Toews and Kane.

The assumption of hometown discounts is laughable. NHL PA would love a big deal to slide in more next tier guys at higher levels.

No matter how much or how little they sign for, the players in total will get 50% of the HRR - no more, no less.

Any "excess" they sign for comes out of the picket of some mid-level or lower player - less room for them.
