Hate to say it, but it needs to be said.

McClement didn't benefit or help this team in any way. He really had, and has, no use or place on this team. His spot should be given, or at least kept open for, a fresh face or a Marlie who has earned it.

Only thing we'll miss about him is his faceoffs.

yeah but we would have had to give him 1.5 to win 53% of his draws..the guy was great on the pk in the lockout season, but took a step back last year. Time for more Holland!

the leafs are really piss poor at center and left wing

Hard to argue that..

As sad as that is, we're probably no worse than last year and might actually be better.

so this is how they change the culture by getting rid of kuli our best two way forward? this will bite us in the ass when he gets 30 again playing with grabasski.

what a (frank)ing joke

I can't tell you how happy I am that he's coming back.

I could tell you how happy I am that Kulemin isn't though.

i'm sure nonis will still make a couple of moves

i like where the defense is heading, rielly and gardiner hold the keys to the future, if they keep improving you're looking at two potential #1 dmen

Yea lots of time left to make moves.

We're still strong on the wings, so hope that helps. I just don't see why they had to get both the Finnish random guy and Santorelli, one or the other would have been good, but I guess depth never hurt anyone.

Yes!

Just not much cap space left for that though. Might have to be a trade that goes down.

Clarkson likely can't be traded, Lupul being traded doesn't add anyone it just replaces him and Franson probably won't get much, if anything, in a trade.

the leafs are very similar to the flyers with some of these players/contract issues

nonis really needed to move franson, reimer, lupul (and clarkson if possible) before the draft so they could have used the salary dumps to clear room to bring in a few upgraded free agents

i think all of those players mentioned above should have been traded for draft picks as this tactic would have given the leafs some much needed cap space during fa period

In fairness, what's the point in dumping Lupul for cap savings? Hard to find a guy that can score like he does, at his cap hit. Would have left our top 6 pretty weak. Who would Kadri play with?

I was fine with signing Cammalleri and trading Lupul...or signing Cammalleri and keeping Lupul, but that didn't happen.

I think Nonis will move Franson and Reimer if he gets a half decent offer. Hard to blame the guy if nobody is making an effort to get them.

Right now, Reimer and Franson don't have salaries on the books and when they did, it wasn't really much $$ to play with.

i hear what you're saying about lupul, and your comment about signing cammy is getting close to what i'm saying

as hard as it is sometime to view players like lupul as salary dumps, you have to think in terms of his cap money being spent on upgrading the team, not focusing on what you might be losing in moving him for picks, same goes for reimer and franson

That's my point though. It's hard to trade Lupul and improve this team. Not saying it can't be done, but very hard to do. I brought the Cammy example up because he was the only option of replacing Lupul without giving up assets to do so. Which would have then made Lupul for picks/prospects/other roster players possible.

I don't think anyone is having a hard time seeing Franson and Reimer go. I think the hard part is finding someone to take them and give a little something something back.

Cammy's older, makes more, is hurt just as often. Lupul should play on the top line again and get his point total up so we can move him when Nylander's ready.

I wouldn't mess with the 1st line chemistry. Cammy actually makes less.

i'm still with you, but my point is that you have to take some chances to clear some cap space to take some more chances (fa period)

if the leafs would have moved lupul, reimer and franson before fa, they might have been able to score p.stastny and j.jokinen which would have been huge top six upgrades

They don't need to move Reimer or Franson to make those deals. They're RFA's, so they have no cap hits as of now. I don't think Stastny would have signed here no matter what we did outside of paying him 8-9 million a year. I would have been pissed if the team lost Lupul, failed to get a better player, and had a gaping hole on the 2nd line.

I don't see J.Jokinen as an upgrade over Lupul at all. Like I said, he would be really hard to replace. If there is a deal out there though that makes this team better, Nonis will make it. He can trade those guys later. He has 2 months he's allowed to be over the cap.

i think franson and reimer both have qualifying offers on the table at 2-2.5m or so and lupul has a 5.5m hit, so you're looking at around 10m to sign statstny and a jokinen type player which would be two huge top six upgrades for the team

i'm not sold on lupul as much as you are and his contract is horrible for a guy who has massive health issues
