The status quo is Frattin, Komarov, and Kontiola.
- ThePresident

how is a low-risk/high reward signing like Kontiola status quo?

We acquired or signed a bunch of 3rd and 4th liners along with bottom pairing Dmen, something we really have an abundance of....we really did not need to focus on that area....and quite frankly is pretty easy to patch up toward the end of free agency or later on....should be last on our shopping list.
- ThePresident

1) The Leafs did - none of us signed these players.
2) The Leafs did not have an abundance of qualified 3rd/4th line players as evidenced by the 3rd /4th lines they iced last year. Upgrade already.
3) Who would you have signed at a 30-40% premium on the D to play in the top 4 based on the deals that were signed earlier this week?
4) Nonis an Co. are evidently trying to make a trade to impact the areas you mention as a need - ie top 6 fwd and a top pairing D. No one says it's not needed, just at what price and via UFA? What does history tell us about those types of deals?
5) Get just a little patience - all the people point to LA and CHI and BOS as being good now forget the multiple years of being crappy they had. I get that the Leafs have been crappy too, but addressing your top 6 and top pairing needs on a piece-meal basis does not turn you into one of the aforementioned franchises - it makes you the current version of the Leafs.
6) Nonis should be applauded for upgrading an area you can impact the first week of July and lets post our report card once the roster is set after training camp. If not applauded for the tweaking he did, at least that he did not do something stupid.

we got frattin a guy the organization liked for a 4th liner at best.

komarov another spark plug everyone likes, including the players. Nonis was actually texted after the signing by a number of leaf players giving him props for signing komarov, the boys were pumped.

sorry man, that says a lot..

Do you understand what status quo means? You listed 3 guys that were not on the team last year, 3 guys that the leafs acquired in the last 4 days. That isn't status quo.

You're not seeing the whole picture. You can't throw money at a player in 2014 when you have more important players to sign on the horizon.
- BetterCallSaul

I don't think he gets it, he wants to spend to that cap and blow it on long term deals that it will take, then end up having to get rid of players leaving more holes to sign their Goalie and #2 centre next year.

Read up before making outlandish comments like this - Nonis has gone on record stating that Komarov's role is going to be expanded from what it was the last time he was with the Leafs.

Hearing that Maple Leafs have some interest in signing Nikolai Khabibulin to back up Bernier. It may not happen but told there's interest.

And even if he can't assume that role and he his just a 3/4 guy, 2.9 will be the going rate for guys like him soon.

I'd say he's worth 1.5 as a 3rd/4th line PKer.

If he has the effect on this team's energy that we're hoping for, he's worth every penny.

he makes ~4% of the team's cap, either way. Even if he's completely useless, it's not going to hurt us that much.

That's great, the Leafs could sign Keith Aulie for 6 million dollars and say they plan on having him as a top pairing defenseman....it does not mean he is or will workout to be a top pairing Dman. We just paid Komarov based off of hope.
