If Weircoch is posting a 56 on-ice goal %, he's obviously doing SOMETHING to regain the puck in his own zone.

Sheltered mins ,and was benched half the season.Might be a reason for this too dont you think??

What do you not understand about the 74 blogs Yost has written showing why weircioch has played very well, and Cowen has no idea what he's doing?
- TommyDeVito

I think a lot of Cowen's problems last year stemmed from rehabbing from hip surgery... imagine being a 21yo 6'5" 230lb hockey player, then having hip surgery; you weren't fast to begin with, and now your timing is way off. I think Karlsson went through a similar thing this year, but he's 1,000,000 times better than Cowen.

Far too early to give on Cowen ,just as its far too early to predict that Wiercoch numbers are the be all and end in the discussion about two very different styles of defenders

The only way this deal makes sense is if two things occur: Philadelphia retains salary, and packages a very desirable draft-pick with Lecavalier in the process. Then, Ottawa can reap benefits away from taking on Lecavalier and his puzzling contract.

Conclusion: No

Don't know if it's the GM or the owner, who refuses to open his wallet for the team, and just drains them.

Combined with the ways the last two captains have left, it's looking damn near Ballard-y.

very similar to what happened to Schenn. Knee injury kept him from working for a summer, and his game suffered big time.

What's important is to keep the confidence up, once that dips, they're done. Schenn could've been a beast, but he was completely mis-managed.

......you're trolling right?

Like, I don't advocate giving up on Cowen yet, but he was a parking cone last year. He didn't do any open ice hitting, didn't clear the crease, didn't crack heads, he was atrocious.

Ottawa's game is supposed to be possession based. Successful teams do it. Wiercioch is quite good at it. At this point, I'd take him over Cowen in a heartbeat. If your argument is that you need a knuckle-dragger on your roster to throw hits and clear the net, then Ottawa should just go re-sign Andy Sutton, because he actually played better defensively than Cowen does at the moment and is far better at those other things you've identified.

- the_terror

I assume he is, which is why I won't respond. My post has nothing to do with Cowen. I'm not on board with giving up on him now. We'll see where he is at the end of the year. Arguing Wiercioch is "just bad" is so dumb, it doesn't warrant merit.

I don't get the hate. I'll probably never get the hate. And shuffling out a defenseman who can play on a second-pairing tomorrow seems like nothing more than another move to push this team, very quietly, towards the draft lottery.
- Travis Yost

That may be what the Sens are doing, but let's say they do get the 1st overall pick. So they draft McDavid but won't be able to resign him after the expiration of his entry level contract because the Sens only want to spend the bare minimum. I'm sorry but if you're the owner of a Canadian hockey franchise you better have some deep pockets. The fans won't accept this $50M Glorified AHL Sideshow for much longer.

I'm not trying to bash your team, mine is no better, but I know Ottawa. It's a government town. If you're winning, everything is great. Start losing, and you're forgotten faster than a glancing thought. Ottawa fans have a very short memory and patience.

Garth Snow is great? You realise you're talking about the same guy who gave Rick DiPietro a 15 year contract?

The problem with Ottawa is not their GM. It's the owner. Melnyk is a penny pincher and won't spend the money necessary to build a championship team. In order to win you've gotta spend near the cap and Melnyk has never been willing to do that.

First of all. Melnyk's too cheap to spend any money on private investigators. Hell the guy won't spend more than $50M/year on his team (salary wise at least).

Secondly, hiring a PI would be for not because Melnyk would realize, by the end of the investigation, that he is the problem with the Sens organization. This team will never be good until Melnyk sells a majority stake in the team or the whole team altogether.
