So Seguin is soft? is that what you're saying.

Perhaps you were referring to Spezza.

- zazzle

Spezza bro.... listen, Spezza is alright, but often injured (back issues) and is not what the Leafs need. The reality is that if the Leafs got him everyone would have said 'there goes the Leafs again selling the future for washed up vets'...

I was talking with another guy about that. You throw Kontiola with those guys and you have a pest line that "should" be able to put up a couple points.

Then if you have a bit of a greener 4th line of something like Frattin-Holland-Bodie but play them ~10 mins a night, they should be able to chip in and play with some energy.

The hinge pin of that whole strategy is: Will Randy play a 4th line that much? (read: properly)

- TheThrill

truth be told i have 0 faith in randy to do anything that helps the leafs.

I agree for the most part -- and like these signings -- but the key difference is that the contenders have a better core than we do.
- gravyface

So, was there a signing or a trade out there that would have made us contenders this year? If not, I'm happy with a few upgrades and avoiding any long term mistakes. I still think a trade with a cap-strapped team is possible

Bit of a stretch, but a decent replacement for Raymond, and can actually play center if needed.

Nice pickup

I'm glad to see the 4th line finally has some skill. It's one of the things that what was missing this past season.
How did we get Bieksa though?

1.5 million for a 35-45 pt player

not bad, considering we pay clarkson 5.5 to do less.

Oh I completely agree, but cores are generally drafted. Ours was largely traded for.

That's why I was saying to the other fella, the only long-term solution for the Leafs is to draft well and re-tool to stay somewhat competitive. Stuff like the Clarkson signing is the poop that has got to stop.

- TheThrill

And stop trading picks, regardless of how late they are. Gave away far too many 2nd rounders and 4th rounders in recent years.

Yes, I think the next move that the Leafs need to do is move Phaneuf at some point over the next 1-2 years if they can find a taker, even if we have to retain some salary.

He's going to be 30 next year and finding a suitor may be difficult if they wait longer.

That should get them a decent haul of picks and/or prospects.

I hope next year (2015) Nylander can step in and play LW with Bozie and Kes.

JVR / Kadri / Lupul

gotta have someone who can take those minutes, rielly gardiner and the boys are not even close to ready for that, lets be serious here...and as much as i like the vet signing, dont think for a second that robidas is going to be able to eat dion minutes, it wont happen.

In 2 years time, when the cap is >$77m and Dion has 5 years left at 31, he will be EASY to move.
