Considering the scary quickness of improvement both Yzerman and Nill seem to be having on their teams it seems plundering Detroits assistants is the way to go
- AdamFrench

Pretty much anything out of Detroit is going to be good. They know how to build teams, scout players, run systems. From a purely off-ice standpoint, they are one of the best franchises in the NHL, IMO.

Yes, the Leafs off-season moves haven't been game changers, but it does seem like Shanny brought a level of know-how with him.

We cut our entire 3rd line loose, and they now make a combined 13 mil. The guys we "replaced" them with make a combined 5.4 (Santo, Leo, Petri).

Teams like the Islanders and Panthers, teams that bottom feed, went insane with the handouts in FA, while top teams (Kings, Hawks, Bruins) made a few cheap low-risk, high-reward signings.

Personally, I'd rather follow suit with the giants of this league than the jokes. It might be a long road ahead, but I feel its a step in the right direction.

If you cannot see that our roster is better and tougher to play against, then there's not a lot to say really
- walshyleafsfan

We seem to have a little more energy on the team and we seem to have a little moe defensive prowess....on paper.

Whether that translates on ice...we'll see.
Again, like I said....a little improvement.

If you feel its a big improvement......well.....Im happy for you.

That is what I'm asking, who is out there? Making a change for the sake of change without a qualified replacement available is asking for more of the same.
- LeafMan

I want a GM who will do what NJ does and hires a Sunny Mehta.
why not have the brightest people advising you.. move away from these old school former hockey minds telling you the same poop that worked 20 years ago.

Skill-wise, I think its pretty close to last season. However, I think it's grittier and tougher to play against. Very marginally better, but better nonetheless.

There isn't really a quick fix for this franchise other than to draft and tweak, draft and tweak. In that sense, I think they have done OK so far

A little to early to answer that. One thing I will say is that missing Gunnarsson and Kulemin will have more of an effect on the team than people give it credit for. Those guys have been around forever. Whether that's a positive or negative effect remains to be seen.
- BetterCallSaul

Who are the guys on the current projected roster that were actually drafted by the Leafs?

1. Kadri - If RC is still around, possible he is gone by the trade deadline or looks for a way out as an RFA in the off season.

2. Reimer - wanted out last season...

3. Rielly - lets see how long it will take before RC starts throwing him under the bus

4. Komarov - 2nd tour of duty

5. Frattin - 2nd tour of duty ( wouldn't be surprised to see him traded yet again)

Any other guys on the Marlies are looking like long shots, and will only get spot duty when injuries hit. They keep talking about developing their youth and finding players from within, but the evidence suggests otherwise.

Playing Brodeur so much cost them a spot.

I can't for the life of me understand what they were thinking by playing him so much over Schneider who had a good season down there.

I assume that is what you were going for with your quote.

9 mil for Grabo and Kulemin for 4 years? Have fun with that

Leafs are currently lumped in with the jokes of the NHL, I get that. I think they get back to respectability before the Isles though.

ahead of the leafs

NJ is a good team.. (frank) they went to the finals in 2012
one of the best possession teams.. cant score since they keep losing players..but they are solid.

2012 finals.. ahead of the leafs last season.... thats sad you think they are bad ..when the leafs are much worse

No I do agree...they seem to be grittier and tougher for sure. Im really interested to see what this new Finn Pietry(sp) can do. I know when we played Vancouver, I specifically remember being annoyed with Santorelli.....which means he was doing his job....so I hope he keeps that up.

It doesn't seem to matter what kind of ramshackle roster they have either. They play the Jersey way and somehow are always the better team

Do the Leafs want soft, injury prone, overrated Centers?
- Hockey_Reverend

So Seguin is soft? is that what you're saying.

Perhaps you were referring to Spezza.
