I know it's Edm but Petry was their de facto #1 last year. RH Dman with some length would be good for the pairings. Its tough to swallow but I think I'd do it with the added flexibility all around

Teams drop money on Bolland and Orpik because it's FA day and everyone has stars in their eyes and make bad decisions. Believe me, if Vinnie was bought out, SOMEBODY would sign him thinking they were getting a great deal. Maybe not as long a contract, but probably around the same number.

But yeah we need to use him better. I think Homer was thinking, Verteran presence could come in and help the kids develop. Not that we'd have to try to hide Vinnie's shortcomings. We need to build a line around him for him to be effective.

Even teams that didn't make big splashes on July 1st are avoiding Vinny. Maybe they don't like his term or feel they have the Flyers over a barrel, but in terms of cash, he's almost $2mm cheaper per year than Bolland.

I'm just saying that if teams really felt Lecavalier was that great an option, he wouldn't be the third or fourth option on their list.

I think Homer was thinking, "Ohhh, Shiny!" and that they could move Brayden Schenn to wing. I think a lot of people ignored that he had a fairly poor season in Tampa(I did, too figuring it might have been just an off year) in terms of all around play and he followed it up with a similar season in Philly.

In both seasons, his production looks OK, but in both cases his team had issues at 5 on 5 when he was on the ice. If he's still here they have to find a way to make it work, and they can't afford to just trade him at any cost.

FWIW, I didn't expect a quick deal. Had a feeling going in that teams would look at other options before Vinny, and would basically view him as a last resort.

Probably because the other GMs are so used to the Flyer GMs caving so easily. Patience.

I'm perfectly patient. I didn't expect him to be traded right away anyhow. Just find it telling that the teams that supposedly wanted him all seem to view him as the prize behind curtain number 3.

If he's that good still, then answer me these two questions:

1. Why are the Flyers trying so hard to trade him?

2. Why are other teams avoiding him like the plague unless the Flyers eat significant cash?

Teams are dropping $5.5mm on Dave Bolland and Olli Jokinen when they could probably have Vinny for less money by giving up a draft pick.

There's no arguing that Vinny can still provide offense, if healthy and used properly. But his two way game has declined and he's not a great skater. If he does stay, which is very possible, the Flyers need to use him better than they did last year.

Teams trade good players all the time. Whenever a player has a down year, that also includes a major injury such as the back injury. That will affect his value around the League. And it creates a potential risk as he still has 4 years left on his deal. This really isn't something that should need to be explained.
I disagree that his two way game has declined. He was never known as a great two way player. And his skating was just fine in the beginning of the year, before the injury.
Also the season before he scored at a 67 point pace, in the strike shortened season. And then last year, he was one of the Flyers best forwards early on, scored at a 34 goal pace. And I know the false argument made was that his shooting percentage was high and he wouldn't be able to maintain that. Well goal scorers are known to have hot streaks. And he's reached that level before. So while he certainly wasn't at the level of his peak play, he was still a point and goal producer both in the strike shortened season, and last season before getting hurt. So in my view, all the evidence points to the injury, and being forced to play LW as the reasons for the poor overall season.
I personally don't have any doubts that Lecavalier is still a good player. Unless his back is something that is going to chronic and affect his strength and skating. And there is certainly a question of whether he is a fit with the team, and in the style of play that the Coach wants to play. But if healthy, and put in the right situation. I think that Lecavalier can still be a pretty good player in the League. And unless there is a physical issue, I don't buy that he's done.

It's so dumb. 26 year old kid gets a $5mm check, it's a holiday and he gets a little stupid while partying...some media here will treat it like he's Stephen Jackson or Donte Stallworth, but it's a stupid little non event that generated headlines because of the TMZ aspect of it.

There was never expected to be a big market for Lecavalier. So stating that teams are avoiding him is a moot point. And when you've had a sub par season, and a back injury, that makes a player a lesser option for other teams.
Lecavalier didn't have a fairly poor season in TB. He scored at a 67 point pace. What's being ignored here in both posts you've made is a major injury, and being forced to play a position that he's not suited for, and obviously isn't comfortable at, as a factor in his season.

Now back to Vinny. I am open to the idea of him taking 2C with Schenn moving to 1LW. Could possibly rejuvenate Vinny and if he holds up to the trade deadline a fringe playoff team may be looking for a rental.

Then Hexy can unload for a pick and wash his hands clean. Of course, we can only hope....

That's right. Lecavalier playing well and looking healthy increases his trade value, and open up more opportunities to trade him.

If he stays, I want to play him with linemates that are better at controlling the play. Schenn and Simmonds are talented players, but they're not a great fit with Vinny at 5 on 5. I'd try Voracek with him, because Jake can lug the puck up ice, control it in the zone, has good vision and generally when he's on the ice, the Flyers are generally spending more time in the opponent's end of the ice than not.

Of course, I've been advocating splitting Giroux and Voracek for most of the off season, because they are the two most dynamic offensive players the Flyers have. So my other option would be to put Vinny on Giroux's RW, where he can become, for lack of a better term, the shooter. He likes going to the high slot on the RW side, Giroux can find him for one timers and I think he could be comfortable there.

That was known before all the trading started, and into the UFA period. No one expected Lecavalier to be easy to trade. Or to be a top option for teams with all the centers that were available.

I'm actually very happy with what Hextall has done. Even if they traded Vinny or opened cap space in another way, I didn't want to splurge in free agency. I was hoping to add solid depth guys to augment, and maybe add a bit of mobility to the blue line
