We have too many forwards on one way contracts. Playing in Bridgeport assumes they'd make it there without being swallowed up. Again, I'm convinced that these moves yesterday were specifically made for the flexibility to decide the lineup, and then readjust the roster a bit. Will some of the defensemen go back and forth on the ferry? Absolutely, but our forwards are all pretty much NHL level players at this point. At least one or two of them have to go elsewhere.

isnt there a change at the end of preseason this year where there's a period of time you can send players down without having them on waivers? I thought I saw that somewhere.

I believe in the old CBA before the season would start, team would be allowed to hide/send down players/salaries on 1way contracts w/o being exposed or claimed of waivers.

I think under the new CBA the salary counts against the cap regardless and think the players get exposed to waivers also. Either something along those lines, but not quite sure???

and even if they make it down they need to pass through to come back up to the big league...Isles need to unload some forwards but I think Garth is going to take his time on his next move...he has plenty of time to dialogue with other GMs.

Three months- plenty of time. In fact, there's still plenty of time to fire the coach.

You can't completely rebuild through the draft. Not unless you're getting 2 first round picks each year AND getting NHL ready players within ONE year of being drafted AND your drafting is impeccable. NO. You cannot rebuild ONLY through the draft. NO ONE does it (tries to do it) exclusively through the draft, except (so he says) Garth.
Someone is finally running out of excuses for his boy.

Note that Snow mentioned the new arena as the key selling point for the signings yesterday..

I thought a lot if things snow made sense. Especially the defense. You are going to get a franchise dman thru a trade and give up nothing. I don't want to trade Reinhardt, pollack and pokke. The truth is it could be at least two of these guys could become that.

There is reason why places like Toronto can't win cup. Their fan base and market don't allow them to build thru draft.

I'm already happy bc of what we did in net. That was #1 on list.

there's a lot of small changes in the cba, I wasn't aware of this either until I heard it on the radio last week. Makes sense though, if you're coming up the organization needs you to play, if you're going down then it's fair that someone else could look to give you an opportunity. kinda good thinking for a change.

Funny thing is, Garth hasn't tried to do it only through the draft either... he has made trades, he has signed free agents, he has claimed players on waivers.

This is the first offseason though where he has aggreively spent to bring in veteran players

this is the first offseason he got sought after players to take our money... If these 2 didnt want to play together... there is a real good chance we would never have gotten them either.

Maybe we could fleece them for Coburn?

- Danformo

They still have Pronger to LTIR and no more real signings to make. The Bruins on the other hand are franked. They have to sign Smith and Krug and have almost no room to the cap. Someone has to go.

Trades of draft picks for what essentially amounts to guys who are OK, and can help him make the cap floor. Trades of guys he wasn't going to sign anyway. Waiver pickups. It's called roster filler- Grabner turned out to be a solid NHL player; Brian Strait, not so much. It's a crap shoot, but its only purpose is to buy time...all of what he has done, until this year, has been to buy time. That's what I consider building through the draft. Now it's done, though- now he's going to have to make a real trade to improve the NHL roster.

Forwards:

Tavares-Lee-Okposo
Grabovski-Kulemin-Strome
Nielsen-Nelson-Grabner
Cizikas-Martin-Clutterbuck

Bailey
Boulton
Conacher
McDonald
Skille

Minors:

Collberg
Halmo
Persson
Sundstrom

This is why we need to make a trade. They just signed someone (Conacher) who doesn't have a spot in this lineup, at all. Bailey no longer has a spot in this lineup- they should really trade him now, before the other GMs get to watch him play again next year. On the other hand....

Defensemen:

de Haan-Hamonic
Hickey-Visnovsky (This is our second pair )
Reinhart-Carkner

Brennan
Czuczman
Donovan
Strait

Minors:

Mayfield
Pedan
Pelech
Pokka
Pulock

We may look at this five years from now, and see that we had 12 really good defensemen at one point....but right now, they're mostly kids, and the adults are underwhelming. It's time to buy some time for the defensemen the way he's been doing that at the forward positions.

I still say he makes a trade for a defenseman but if he does not add a defender to our blue line he'd be making the same mistakes he did last yr. We need defense.

Three years....every summer....we need a defenseman....we get forwards. He did it again this year, but at this point, if he doesn't realize he has far too many forwards, then he might as well quit. He needs to make a trade. I can't imagine he would have signed those two guys on Wednesday without that in mind.

EDIT: He also needs to jettison the crap on the back end. I just can't see any reason to keep Strait or Carkner anymore, especially if Reinhart should really be in the NHL, which I believe is the case. This is why we need a solid vet back there- those two vets are just in the way at this point.

I agree 100% with the forwards... not sure what we are doing with the defence...

But it is nice problem to have with the forwards... to actually have 12 NHL players on our roster.

We may see Conacher make the 4th line, and one of Martin or Clutterbuck traded along with Bailey, and one of our defenceman for a solid defenceman.

Reinhart might start in the AHL... then move up.

I guess we will have to see what Snow has planned.

Still a few teams with Cap issues!!!

Question.... Do u really think that Snow knows that this team needs D? Besides that, D is ( top D ) is at a premium and most teams don't trade their assets. In FA, isles are not a preferred destination right now and/or a successful franchise. Now grant it, I don't want this team to make a trade for trade sake. Isles finally added NHL quality depth to roster and now team has assets to trade w/o having much glaring holes.

Right now the team just needs 1/2 Dmen, isles have the whole summer to do so, plus other teams still need to evaluate their roster & salary cap. If nothing gets improved on the back end by the start of next season then Snow has failed again. Trust me, I'll be the 1st blast him like I usually do....
