The defense is better as it stands now, granted we still have a caveman with zero hockey IQ as a Captain and supposedly #1 D but it is better today then last season.

He was a Legit #1 D until out starting goalie went down and the entire team, without exception, poop the bed.

Is he Subban, or Doughty, or Pietrangelo or Karlsson ... obviously not, but if you were signing any of these guys today, you would be paying a significantly more than 7.

A *possible* upgrade at the 5-6 defense position isn't even the minimum overall improvement I expect year over year.

I also find it amusing that people think a 37 year old with 2 broken legs, signed for 3 years is a good signing, or trading our dregs for some other team's dregs makes us better.

While they're clearly better players, I'd argue that Dion is better at defence than either of Karlsson or Subban (has a lower GA/60 than either, despite the overall pooptiness of the Leafs D as a unit).
