We have tons of third and fourth line players. Why spend it on another? 1M isn't bad, I guess. He is a irritating player to play against.

Not buying JR wants to lose Sutter, especially to sign Downie.

*when he's healthy

the latter half of last year he had this absent look on his face like he had no idea where he was. Not a bad signing though, low risk.

Another bottom six player, looks like Rutherford might be ready to move Sutter. If we sign Gibbons then I'll be looking heavily at twitter for Bob's call of Sutter for...

It has to be said that the last time Downie was effective was when he was under Tocchet.....
- cap1681

Tocchet's handiwork is all over this signing.

Cheap pickup, and a guy whose career goals per game (.17) isn't far behind Kulemin's (.19).

I would think that Downie and Comeau will be vying for 1 spot if we pick up a top 6 guys like I think we will

Everytime this comes up, you give a snide, sarcastic "nothing to see here ... there is no validity to it" comment. The same predictable "he has character issues because he is an exuberant black hockey player". I'm bringing up the fact that MULTIPLE people in the media, who have contact with the kid, have spoken or written about his character issues. Are they lying? One or two articles, you can probably write off ... more than that, well ...
- Oneonta Penguin

What exactly are his character issues, though? Just saying someone has character issues, is pretty damn vague and really says nothing about the guy. I think there is a lot of credence to the fact that a lot of the outspoken black hockey players are cast with this "character issues" tag, but nothing other than they say what's on their mind and are confident to the point of being arrogant ever comes out. Who cares, give me a guy who says what's on his mind and is full of himself that also has the talent to back it up. I would gladly take E. Kane, Subban, and Ho-Sang on my team and all 3 of those guys have been labeled as guys with "character issues" but without very many details about what exactly the issue is other than they are outspoken and cocky.

We are adding sandpaper and depth. Unfortunately, you can likely expect both Dupuis and Bennett in the top 6 again. At least we have a third line though.

It would be interesting. 3.3M is the magic number. Below that, it's a 2nd round pick, but i think the Pens would match. Above that, it's a 1st and a 3rd.

Because this team has zero toughness upfront. Love it.

Grab Ott too and the 4th line will be on everyones mind.

I don't think that was ever in question from the FO's POV.

This method will also give them some deadline flexibility to add a top 6 wing if it's necessary at that point in time.

Dealing Martin at the deadline would be stupid. You either trade him during the offseason or he stays on the roster for the entire season.
- cap1681

why? Players see their max value at the deadline most of the time. gives pens time to evaluate puliot, see if matta was just exhausted at the end of last year and see if sammy, doumalin/harrington are legit players in the nhl.

Last time JR signed an average 3rd line player it was 60 million for 10 years...just saying.

I don't see anyone offer sheeting him above the $3.3 mark. Even if someone thinks he is worth that price, I highly doubt anyone thinks he is worth that price and the draft picks they have to give up. Below $3.3, I could see, but like you said, the Pens probably match and does he even sign that offer sheet if it is over a year length knowing the Pens will match?

We have too many bottom six guys. Ott, at this juncture would be a dumb signing.

another solid cheap signing by jr (or botterhill/fitzgerald/guerin, who the hell knows) Compare him to almost any other gm, exception maybe to Jim Nill, and he is hitting this off season out of the park!
