Bill,

I saw something last night and now I can't remember where that Winnipeg likes Coburn. I like Coburn and think he does a lot and brings size and skating. But I might be ok with moving him if we are getting back someone like Bogosian. My thinking is that if Hextall wants the kids to develop then why not bring in a 24 year old dman who can possibly turn into that number one we have been looking for. I understand that potential gets coaches and gms fired but if he can get to that stage then you have prospects like Ghostisbiere and Hagg and Morin and Sanheim your starting to have a really solid core on d. Also his deal is very solid at a good cap hit.

- J35Bacher

If you can get Bogosian back, then yes. But it would take more than Coburn alone to convince Winnipeg to make that trade. Even if Bogosian's offensive game never emerges, he has still become a reliable minutes eater when healthy. Coburn is significantly older and signed for two more seasons.

So what was the deal with the lower than expected cap this season? Wasn't there something about how they're counting that big TV deal, that it maybe wasn't all included or something? Won't there be a sort of large boost next season, and then a leveling out beyond that?

What does planning accordingly to the overage mean? In order to avoid the overage they have to do two things. Keep Pronger off of LTIR, which is a reduction in usable cap space of 4.9M this year. And have the ability to carry Timonen's full 1.5M bonus money on this years cap. Which is another reduction of 1.5M of cap space for this year that has to go to that.

1.5M is 1.5M. If the cap goes up 5M, it only goes up 3.5M for the Flyers.

- MJL

That's true, but which defensman would replace Kimmo this year for $2M or less?

I wonder if that happened during his time in Philly.

I wondered the same thing.

I also vaguely remember something between he and Ken Wregget, but I could be wrong.

If two people have a 100 dollars to spend in a store. One guy goes in and picks out all that he wants to buy, and spends 98 dollars.
The other guy goes in, picks out all he wants to buy, and only spends 88 dollars. The guy who spent 98 dollars mismanaged his money? Or did he just already spend most of his allotment. And has less to spend the next time he goes in the store?
This idea that because the Flyers don't have a ton of cap space, means that they mismanaged the cap, is false.

- MJL

I'm curious. Do you believe the Flyers are happy with the contracts they currently have? Do you think the Flyers wish they had cap room to spend right now?

The Canadian dollar's strength (or lack thereof) was a factor.

I think some TV money did not come in when it was expected.

I think they wish Pronger was healthy. As do Boston with Savard.

With the first question, they're trying to trade Lecavalier, so they feel they have to move him, and they would like to have that money to do something else. I think the answer to the second question is obvious.

Then it goes up by 3.5M and you deal with that, because you got to use the 1.5M this season on something else. They'll just deal with it and not assume they'll be able to use the entire increase next year. I don't think they'll miss the playoffs because of 1.5M they couldn't spend. If they do, they aren't very good anyways

Weird Free Agency for the Flyers, not used to this lack of movement. Hexy is trying to clean up Homer's mess, but his deals to date have been solid IMO

Timonen - Good contract
Schenn - Good contract
Zepp / Emery - Good contracts
Jones - Phantom depth
Umby / Hartnell Trade - long term cap relief

I wonder if Florida would part with a guy like gudbranson. It sounded like they considered it for the first pick... Could Hexy look to move coby and vinny in a deal there?

But next year, that 1.5M could be used for something else, such as adding that top defenseman. I think you get into the mismanagement realm when you borrow from the future for now.
If Timonen makes all his bonuses, which he probably will. The Flyers are choosing to spend 1.5M more this year then the Upper Limit. And choosing to spend 1.5M less next year then the Upper Limit. I would reverse that.

As a "hockey trade" I don't like the Hartnell/Umberger trade, but I understand it for what it is.

If we're moving Coburn, the return better be better than Gudbranson.

2nd line center in Nashville sounds about right. I still feel this deal gets done now that the 2million has been paid. Nashville was very quiet yesterday and with not getting a center at all I think they come back and look at Vinny now.

Vinny for Stalberg.

Book it

- J35Bacher

From listening to Hextall I think it gets done too. Trying to read into the quotes and I have a hard time believing he's back next year.

Not sure if Stalberg is the piece coming back. I'm not really thrilled about that piece. I would just as easily take a couple 3rd rounders or something.

I could also see them wanting to unload Gaustad.

I'd like picks, too, as a pure dump, but I think we're taking something back. If not Stalberg, something similar.

I know what you're saying, but I guess I just don't see it as that big of a deal. They aren't in the realm of what Boston did. And I bet Boston will still be ok this season because they have a solid core that is all inked up. You also say quite often that the Flyers can clear space whenever they want by making moves. If a top Dman was available, they'd just go all Yzerman and clear whatever they needed to make it happen right?

He gets hyped because he was a #3 overall pick. But that's like saying we should target Thomas Hickey (who actually put up some points) because he was a #4 overall.
