I'm not here to troll at all. I like Chiasson a lot. Is he going to be a point per game guy? Prob not. I'm more pointing out how much ppl over valued Spezza (including Murray) and it maybe cost them.

I'm also pointing out that the Sens owner is killing your team slowly here by not paying ppl. It's a crappy spot as fan, for sure. But Spezza, even will all his ppg stats, pulled barely anything as a return.

It wasn't a typical trade though, it was a trade demand being played out in the media. Who knows what they could have gotten from Nashville. It's tough to say what a guy is worth when you're dealing from a big disadvantage.

I would have liked him with longer term on the Leafs at around 5 even.

you traded a 1st line center for a 2nd/3rd liner(in a few years), a 2nd, and a couple of nobody prospects.

If the team wasn't as as it is, they could have just resigned him, and Alfie, and been far better.

At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised to see Ryan walk.

they didn't want to re-sign him. they didn't want to invest top dollar and lots of term in a 31 year old, with a very bad back.

yes, he's incredibly talented, but it wasn't a smart long term move for the club....with turris, lazar, and zibby all upcoming centers, it made no sense investing long term in spezza.

if they were a contender right now, then fine....but even with spezza in the lineup, sens aren't contending.....and no, alfie wouldn't have made a difference either.

If the team wasn't as niggardly as it is, they could have just resigned him, and Alfie, and been far better.

Edit: and teams get more than this for a couple of months of a 2nd liner at the deadline... so don't say it's ok because it's only for one year

please point out a better package at the deadline last year.

moulson got traded for nothing, so did vanek, gaborik, etc

spezza pulled a decent return.

he got a young, top six forward. 2 decent prospects, and a 2nd rd pick in a deep draft.

the only team he would have likely extended with was st louis, and murray probably knew that, and so did dallas. which means it was a deal for 1 year of spezza.

- sensarmy_11

I don't see why he wouldn't extend here with the players he will be playing with and how bright our future looks. If he has a good year and we make a playoff run, why wouldn't he extend with us.

I think that Ryan will leave for sure now. There's no way Ottawa is trending anywhere but down with the amount of talent they have trade/let leave and the goaltending really fell apart last year. They need to show players that they are competing and not tanking.

he might....but it was pretty much common knowledge that he wanted to go to st louis.

he might love it in dallas, and extend there.....but i think st louis was the only place murray would have been dealing him with the understanding that he wasn't a rental

A lot of Sens fans had unrealistic expectations for what they would get in return for Spezza. Nobody was going to give break the bank (#pick, best prospect, good NHL player) for a good but aging center with only one year left on his deal.

They got a big, young, defenseman who can play right away. Looks like he's got some offensive talent but probably needs to work on his defense. If he keeps improving this might look like a huge win for the Sens in a few years. Good defenseman are harder to find than centers in this league.

The best part is that it's done and Murray didn't pull a Gillis and let this hang like a cloud over the Sens heads until the trade deadline. What's done is done and they can move on and go from here.

Whoops, I guess I must have been thinking about Steve Chaisson. 35 points for a right winger is not as impressive as 35 points for a D-man. He's still big and could turn into a power forward but you can't build your team on Wingers.
