Not good enough ,we have money ,cap and cheap younger players to add something of substance to that lineup .BM needs to do this ,and EM needs to free up the cash to let him

Just feel compelled to make a couple quick comments here:

People cannot hold Bryan Murray accountable for what is going on in Ottawa. Bryan Murray is a manager who is playing out the tail end of his career as close to his home as possible. He's already past retirement age, but there's no question that he is an astute hockey man, and that he's got a great staff working for him. The scouts are top-notch in this organization, the development staff are outstanding, and despite the fact that people might believe Murray to be in over his head, I honestly think he's played the best hand he could have with the cards he's been dealt.

You cannot polish a turd, as they say.

We've all been harping on it for weeks and months and years, but the blame for the current state of things in Ottawa starts and ends with Eugene Melnyk. This is not on Bryan Murray, this is not on Jason Spezza, not Daniel Alfredsson, not any member of their staff or anyone who plays for or has played for their team. This is all about Eugene.

When he came in and saved this team from relocation, he was a hero. The man was clearly a little bonkers, the stuff he said in the media was unusual at best, but we could all tolerate it because he was giving his management staff the fiscal freedom to ice a competitive team. Murray might have struck out on a trade from time to time, but at least he had that opportunity.

And several years later here we are on free agent day.

Ottawa is rumoured to have interest in Pouliot, gone to Edmonton. Interest in Moulson, gone to Buffalo. Interest in Hemsky, a player they actually had an inside track with, they undercut the bid and trade away the guy who he would have actually been interested in playing with, and both are now in Dallas. Ottawa gets out of today with a decent roster player from Dallas, a couple of prospects, a draft pick, and the resigning of a player who, for some unknown reason, still seems to want to be on this team.

Eugene Melnyk's meddling and penny-pinching has cheated the Ottawa Senators fanbase out of something they honestly deserve. This is not a bottom feeder market. Sure, it's not New York or Toronto, but there are a million people in the area, it is a super-traditional hockey market, and the team has always been well supported. Or at least it was, when the Senators were able to either sell winning or sell hope. Right now, winning is a huge question mark, and the fact remains that until Eugene releases the purse strings a little, hope could very well be out the window. Losing MacArthur and Methot and Ryan next summer over money would be a huge mistake.

Fans in this city want to support a winner, but more than that they want to support something they can be proud of. It's embarrassing to say that you're a fan of this team, which does nothing to support it's own fanbase. It's no wonder there are so many empty seats in that arena now. Back a few years ago, when this team was not very good, but had just managed to pull off a great draft and were rebuilding towards something, even then the fans of this team were behind them. I had season tickets that year. It was exciting going to the rink. You knew they wouldn't win a lot, but the positive vibes behind them was fun to be around, and wouldn't you know it, they snuck right into the playoffs.

Now that we've watched the team lose their captain for a second straight year, and they can't find a free agent to sign on with them that isn't either a reclamation project or a third-tier guy, it's extremely difficult to not feel the apathy setting in. That's when things are gonna get real bad. The fact that people hate Eugene's poor me act so much goes to show that fans in this town still care. Once they stop barking, that's when Eugene has lost them.

He's gotta find a way to open up that budget by $10mm annually to get some player help on this team, or he's got to sell this team. He owes it to the people to lay down their hard earned money to watch the team play. They deserve a winner, and it behooves the owner to do everything he can within reason to put a winner on the ice. That you have a top-10 market in the NHL that is underspending every team in the NHL despite the fact that they're just one year removed from a 2nd round playoff appearance is a disgrace, and I really wish the league would step in and find ownership for the Senators that is proportionate to what the fanbase deserves.

Shameful.

Yeah, this.

Primary responsibility lies with Melnyk for the decline of this franchise, but Murray's moves- regardless of how they turn out in the short-to-medium term - have been done foolishly.

Sign Ryan and MacArthur long term. If they don't agree trade them before it's too late. Things are looking pretty bad in terms of the face of the franchise. Below par free agents aren't even signing here. It could be because of the lack of funds, but also the fact that Ottawa has a bad reputation with dealing with players. When Pouliot turns you down, you know something is wrong.

To be fair that contract has the potential of being one of the worst signed today far too much term

Available spending (maybe Grabo?):

- Travis Yost

So $9M for one season to Volchenkov, $9M for a season to Komorov, lose Ryan at the deadline, and......blame it all on the casino bid.

The end.
