Did Downie sign today? I'd take him with Komorov on a line, that would be fun. - Leafland
With Ott as their centre.

Who Leafs got Tuesday
F Leo Komarov, 27. Four years, $3.8 million.
Role: Scrappy winger who can play high up or down the lineup; can take faceoffs.
Quote: “Leo offers more than we even got out of him two years ago. He’s going to give you whatever he has. He gets under people’s skin. He finishes every check.” — Nonis.
F Matt Frattin, 26. Trade for Jerry D’Amigo.
Role: Speedy winger who can score, but had a rough year in Los Angeles and Columbus.
Quote: “We know what we have. We think he’s going to fit in well.” —Nonis.
D Stephane Robidas, 37. Three years, $9 million.
Role: Veteran of more than 800 NHL games brings leadership but coming in off a broken leg.
Quote: “I like the direction the team is going. They want to surround the young players with some leadership. That’s why I feel like it’s a good fit for me.” — Robidas. |

If he is viewed as a Richard, which I think he might be based on what has been said, written and what things look like third person watching games, then him being here would cause a bit of a rift, but wearing the C - can't be good... |

I think Lupul & Franson (and maybe even Reimer), maybe be packaged for a 2nd line winger.. |

Why?
Lupul already is a pretty good 2nd line winger. |

Corsi Relative Quality of Competition
D - Dion Phaneuf: 2.086 Corsi Rel QoC
Leading the NHL in this category is the polarizing captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Dion Phaneuf. Those that are well-acquainted with Dion know that he is misused to an obscene degree, but possessed many evident skills that make him a top-pairing defender in this league. - PinkSock
Laws of Advanced Stats
1) Any time the Leafs actual results run contrary to the advanced stats, the sample size was not big enough.
COROLLARY: Even a sample size 1/8th the sample size above is enough to prove that the advanced stats were right.
2) Any time a Maple Leafs player has good advanced stats, the sample size was too small and the player is the most overpaid and over-rated player in the league.

If we were going to do that we should have done it before teams like Florida and Buffalo went on their shopping sprees. Few teams have the cap space to accommodate those three now.

The deal the Leafs were hoping to make today would have sent Cody Franson to Montreal for Josh Gorges. You can read it in my column tomorrow |

Now it is time for the Leafs to trade ... or wait until September and pick up whatever useful veterans are left for cheap.

I want guys like that, since everyone hates the Leafs already, we might as well give them a reason.
