We've now officially turned Anton Stralman into Bobby Orr, and Dan Boyle into Roman Hamerlik.
Put me in the camp of preferring Boyle on the short term, rather than a 5 year deal for Stralman, which the organization may regret when a few of these prospects we all love so much take the next step.
I'm not trying to be crabby here, but what about Anton Stralman's long term track record makes this guy so irreplaceable? - Pete V

The organization that arguably saved his career offered him 4 years/16 million (according to accounts), and he went to Tampa for not much more annually, although he got the extra year. Perhaps some of this can be placed on Anton Stralman. Maybe he just wasn't that in to us. |

Stralman is as steady as they come and proved he can play here and fit in perfectly. To let him walk, while his contract demands were beyond reasonable, for a 38 year old who's nearly at the end of his tank makes zero sense to me. And let's not forget the 500k who could go to brass zucc kreider or moore. |

Stralman had a total of 13 points last year and 1 goal. He was ripped on a lot during the season. He did have an amazing playoffs but can he repeat that for 5 years? Boyle for 2 years is fine with me. The Rangers need more offense from the blue line. Boyle brings that. Klein can fill in later in games to bring more of that defensive presence.
I get the hate over Glass, but I am perfectly fine with Dan Boyle. |

What if he wanted to leave? Sather had $16M over 4 years on the table since the start of the summer and Stralman said no. Maybe Stralman wants to get out of NY.
Let's also not forget the whole no state income tax thing in Florida. |

I think that the peak of Stralman's career was this past Spring. Still rock solid, but that level on play is unsustainable for him over 5 years IMO. |

Our D core has been really good for a while. I wanted to lock up those 4 and for once have a core that we keep for more than 2 years. I'm tired of turn over. The guy proved he could play and play extremely well here, even in the playoffs. Which our higher paid players did not do. That doesn't mean I don't like the higher paid guys we locked up, some struggled in the playoffs. While he was consistent.
We got as far as we did on our depth and defense. Depth took a hit and we took one of the consistent performers on our defense out for an unknown. Neither you, I, Sather, or TJ can say how Boyle is going to perform in NY. But I know Stralman was consistent and could play well here.
I am just tired of seeing a new team with some new veteran guy being brought in here, year after year after year, that had his better years in another jersey. I want to keep our own players for once. |

Certainly possible. I just see something like this and automatically blame sather. Don't think anyone could blame me. He did end up getting 4.5 per so I'm not too upset about it. Glass however was just a brainless signing. |

This is not direct to you, but for about a 20 game stretch during the season, there were alot of people not saying that Stralman was as steady as they come. There were alot of people that wanted him benched. There were alot of people that were wondering if the Rangers should pull their 3 year/9 million offer.
But, I do agree, he is steady and was a very good defensemen for the Rangers, for the most part. But, do I want to be locked into steady for 5 years at $22.5 million, when I am already locked in long term to most of the defense core, with Staal still due to be signed. No, I don't.

It's a core 4 except Klein is the 4th. Now we have a solid pp QB to boot.

What it tells me is the prospects like skiej Allen etc are gonna be counted on...it's the youth. All you guys kill me..don't trade the youth, but also don't let them come up n play. I can't figure it out - Slimtj100
You can never have too much depth. If Girardi or McDonaugh go down with an injury we will all be crying for more defensive depth.
The youth aren't competing for Stralman's spot anyway. They are competing for Staal, Klein, and J Moore's spots. Let them force one of those guys out of the lineup before passing on a reasonable contract for a RHD that works well in the Rangers system. Walk away from Staal next season if necessary. It's not all on lockdown. It's not like Staal or Stralman couldn't be moved if one of the young guys proves their worth.

Not enough Kool Aid out there to convince me that Sather struck out looking today, epic failure, same old Rangers, maybe in 10 years we'll get it right, I just feel bad for Hank, still has to carry the burden of this team' success |

Understand your point completely. I just really, really liked our top 4 the way it was and didn't really see the need for a switch up. Stralman was arguably our best d-man in the playoffs. Got off to a rough start but I'll miss the guy |

There is a reason Klein was and is on the 3rd pair. And everyoen makes it out like Klein has some magical NTC I don't know about. If Skej or anyone else is good enough to surpass him he'd be dealt away. It isn't that hard to understand. You aren't married to Kevin (frank)ign Klein. |
