Non answer?

It was a complete and intelligent answer. And it's how the best teams go about their business. Waiting would be foolish. Can't afford to wait while the primes of players like Giroux, Voracek, and Simmonds, flush down the drain.

- MJL

Oh, so you are saying the Flyers are an example of winning smartly? That's what you are saying?

Amazingly enough, while i support many things this team does, this franchise will be better served by not giving up multiple draft picks for rentals AND giving a pre-emptive contract to avoid free agency. That's not "winning smartly." That's you not drafting well enough, or developing well enough, your own players so you HAVE to do something.

Per bill on twitter

@billmeltzer: Hextall (on value of goalie relationship): "I have been on some teams where the goalies haven't gotten along, and it can divide the team."

- PhillaBully

I'm a fan of Hextall's candor. Big change from the Homer.

With two 35+ relied upon for most of the puck-moving, having a back-up like those guys you mentioned (add Diaz) might not be such a bad idea.
- Tomahawk

Yeah, but does he sign those guys? Does Berube play them, or do they rot in press box?

I was just clowning. I'm mad about Ehrhoff. The dream is to have a really good player sign with your team for much less money than he's worth

Well... Devin Setoguchi can certainly skate fast. Hasn't done much else in recent years but he can certainly skate.
- bmeltzer

When the figure skating portion of the schedule breaks out, I look forward to Setoguchi's contribution.

All kidding aside, he'd be a nice buy low candidate.

So let's assume we Can't move Vinnie and half this board commits seppuku with a hockey stick. How would you best try and use him next year?

Personally I don't think he really works anywhere except Center. Meaning I think Hartnell's best replacement is Brayden Schenn. (Meaning we should have probably traded Brayden for his brother Luke instead of JVR but let's not cry about that again) Other than that I'd probably try either Read or Umberger with Vinnie & Simmonds. Both are Quick and I know at least Read has enough skill to get Vinnie the puck. Umberger hasn't played with Vinnie yet, so maybe there might be some Chemistry there.

My hope is that Vinnie's injuries were slowing him down last year and that this year he's had some more time to get into skating shape to start the season.

Sorry for another capgeek roster, but this one gets us under the cap although it relies on trading Vinny for a pick with no salary retained.

FORWARDS
Devin Setoguchi ($2.500m) / Claude Giroux ($8.275m) / Jakub Voracek ($4.250m)

CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $48,571

Something like that could definitely work. Although it's not much, they are banking some cap space there. And if they have an injury, they'll just have to put Pronger on LTIR. And that would give them plenty of space to work with.

I think with that roster they would want to put him on LTIR right away so they could recall Laughton (making Rosehill the 13th forward) and sign their depth defensemen.

Remember the extra year given to Lilja?

I recall some arguing it was a "solid move" Hilarious.

That $737K cap hit of his was a real cap killer for a 6th/7th D.

What happened to not getting sucked in? And you completely missed the point. It was about how the Flyers should operate moving forward, not about how they operated in the past. And I clearly stated not giving up the future. So I'm baffled by how you got this from what I stated.

I don't see why Hexy wouldn't consider it... Muzzin/Martinez took turns eating popcorn in LA. And I'm sure Berube would be tickled pink to have some semi-decent options... like how he practically tripped over himself to get Akeson into the lineup after a season of having to choose between Rinaldo and/or Rosehill.

That's an option for sure. And might wind up as something similar to what they'll do. But it would be nice to stay out of LTIR. But that's probably a pipe dream.
