This has been swishing around in my head too. I keep coming back to the obvious emphasis this management is putting on skating as a big reason it won't happen. If you're thinking reclamation project Setoguchi seems to be a better fit (although I'd prefer Healtly).
- snake17

I agree, however Heatley might be the more capable and skilled of the two. I couldn't imagine Heatley's skating is any worse then Scott Hartnell's and Heatley would get a shot with Giroux and Voracek just by reputation alone. The top spot would be his to lose.

Well then there better be a ton of patience. Because it's 3-5 years for those players to get to that level. If at all.
- MJL

If that's what it takes, then that's what it takes -- at some point people have to get a grip and realize how you win in this sport. It's not rocket science.

You gotta have your own guys, and a couple of them have to be defensemen. And you do have to wait.

Doughty and Voynov. Keith and Seabrook. Orpik and Letang and Scuderi. Those teams all had to wait at least 3 years after those players were drafted before they won Cups.

The only exception since 2008-2009 is Boston, which made one of the single-greatest FA hauls in NHL history when Zdeno Chara decided to come -- and even then, it took John Muckler deciding he wanted to extend Wade Redden

Something being your opinion does not make that thing a fact.
- Jsaquella

Right back at you. Calling Quincey or any of the other players you often listed as good, is not a fact also. But what is a fact is that the Flyers identified MacDonald, and obviously liked him as a player. And the deals showed today that MacDonald's deal is a fair deal and reasonable deal for both sides.

Quincey is hated by the Detroit fan base far more than MacDonald is hated here... even with his contract.
- flyler

MacDonald was hated by the Isles fan base. So if we're gonna use that excuse, let's remember that most Isles fans were ecstatic they traded MacDonald

They also told us Streit wasn't worth signing and they'd be fine without him.

There weren't many GM's lining up to give Quincey an "Orpik" contract today, so, yeah.
Do you think we would have made the playoffs last year with Mez, & no MacDonald?

- puckhead17

Hard to say, they didn't have that big of a point cushion. Meszaros just wasn't back to the level he needed to be at. And adding MacDonald was a definite upgrade to the team.

I said they were comparables. Which they are, based on both stats & watching them play. I'm actually looking at things besides my own opinions when comparing players, because I want more information than my own opinion when considering players.

I have a question that maybe somebody can answer...Could the flyers trade Pronger's contract to a team trying to make the cap floor for future considerations? or is the fact that he is hurt make that not possible?...Not saying anyone would do it, but just wondering if it was within CBA...
- nonpoint22

That's kind of like one of those legal points where there isn't a precedence for it. I'm not aware of any rule against it. But it seems like something I think the League wouldn't like.

Mez paired with Luke didn't achieve the same results, as when he paired with MacDonald, so the move was a win/win.
Honestly, I can't believe the bashing he gets.

That's what I thought your motive was for asking your question. Thanks for providing information that is clearly known already, but may I suggest cleaning those tinted glasses a bit. To state it is not a cap crisis is beyond delusional, every move they do or would like to do is contingent on salary reduction. That is by definition a cap crisis.
- Glak18

I just gave the Flyers cap picture, which obviously doesn't point to a crisis, shows the validity of calling something delusional. The fact that they just signed a player to a 1M deal, without reducing any salary, invalidates that it's a cap crisis.

IMO, I would definitely rather have Quincey for 2 years at 4.25 then Amac at 5 for 6 years.

However, I do think AMac is the better overall player. Just the two deals in the roles they'd fill on this team versus our cap situation. Thats all.

The Macdonald stuff really has to stop. I said it about 10 pages back: imagine being a Capitals fan today.

I can't either. I'm convinced people are working so much in this poopty economy, they just don't even bother watching the games anymore.

They just rely on silly stats and contract details to form opinions. Sheesh.

I don't believe that the Flyers have to wait for those players. In fact I think waiting for them would be foolish. I think you can try to win, and develop players at the same time. It's an ongoing process. The Flyers just have to make smart moves and the right moves when they present themselves. Because none of those players are a guarantee.

I'd be straight-pissed, because there's no way anyone with eyes should be trying to justify that contract

If Orpik was a Flyer under that deal, I'd be hard-pressed to think of a single good thing to say about him as a player at this point in his career

It does, I'm done. The thing people seem to miss is my issue is not with MacDonald, rather the process & terms of his deal. If he signed a 2 year deal at $5mm, I'd be content

I disagree that Quincey, who you just named is a comparable to MacDonald. Neither were a lot of other players you listed. I think MacDonald is a lot better player then Quincey is.
