This needs to be posted again:

Gord Miller @GMillerTSN · Jun 30
Every year at this time, defensive defencemen get bought out, and then on July 1st, teams shell out huge $ for other defensive defencemen.

Orpik $5.5M
Mitchell $4.25M
Engelland $2.9M
Stoner $3.25
Fayne $3.65

- Tomahawk

You have to laugh, man. You just have to laugh.

If I had kids, I'd bet my firstborn that Orpik won't see the end of that contract and Washington's going to be begging to buy him out.

It's simply common sense of why he took a way below market value deal, and a one year term, to sign with the Pens. If you don't want to see that, not much I can do about it. But it's pretty obvious.

I'd agree with that completely, because Orpik walking alone is a net positive.

That deal, the Bolland deal, the Meszaros deal...those are my headscratchers for the day.

David Bolland, 5 for 27.5. I don't even know how to begin to parse that.

If you're tanking for McDavid/Eichel, Mez is your man

His point totals make him look more attractive than he is. He's become a very one dimensional player at this point
- PhillySportsGuy

It really depends on if he can get healthy, and get back to the level he was at before the injuries.

Even then that is an upper limit for him. Only one year though, they didn't pull a full Leino here

But he's right about Nisk, Erhoff and a lesser extent Boyle. AMac is a good player but it is fair for people to be skeptical in my opinion.

All I'm saying is that, based on the deals today as a whole (and we can include Nikitin too), it's not looking nearly as bad. Skeptical is fine, but to crucify it wrt the other deals is a bit much.

Flyers have a 10% cap overage to work with... 4.74 million left or something, but if they use it they WILL be moving someone to get underneath the cap when the season starts.

And way, way worse defensively... plus he has a scary injury history. Super nice guy, however.

C'mon Bill, that doesn't help with the narrative that Holmgren screwed up!

I think Bolland will help the Panthers. He's being vastly overpaid, but they have some good, young centers. Orpik is a net negative from the time he steps on the ice for them.

If you use all of you 10% than you are in a position where you HAVE to move salary and you pretty much gotta bend over and take what some other team will give you. I think that's what they are trying to avoid.
