Who do you think would want him? Teams should be weary with the conky issues.

Sabres seem to be all about overpaid wingers who mistakenly play defense.

So much for asking for less in FLA and TX.

I was making a funny.

I'm guessing that that offer of 7 or 8 didnt really exist.

I'm not claiming to be a GM caliber hockey savant, but I really do believe that Niskanen's game is over rated, and he's not worth anything close to 7 or 8.

Also seems somewhat reasonable in light of other signings

Pens just saw close to $70M walk out the door and $4M walk back in and I think their defense got better

And like I said, he's better offensively than MacDonald is.
- PLindbergh31

And way, way worse defensively... plus he has a scary injury history. Super nice guy, however.

With Pouliot able to take one of those spots, it definitely did.

Orpik and Engelland were not good in their own zone, and both got overpaid.

Niskanen wasnt exactly a liability though.

Orpik was flat-out bad and Engelland wasn't good to begin with. Ehrhoff and Niskanen are a wash, at the least.

It's a shame, they actually had a fair nucleus to build around with Alzner, Carlson, and Orlov. If the rest of the team would actually try playing defense, they'd be fine. Now....

This needs to be posted again:

Gord Miller @GMillerTSN · Jun 30
Every year at this time, defensive defencemen get bought out, and then on July 1st, teams shell out huge $ for other defensive defencemen.

Orpik $5.5M
Mitchell $4.25M
Engelland $2.9M
Stoner $3.25
Fayne $3.65

Caps sign Niskanen so when they suck next year everyone will blame him instead of OV.

I'd agree with that completely, because Orpik walking alone is a net positive.

That deal, the Bolland deal, the Meszaros deal...those are my headscratchers for the day.

David Bolland, 5 for 27.5. I don't even know how to begin to parse that.

Forces them to play Despres too

I can't believe they lucked out so much to get Ehrhoff. JR will get all this praise like no other GM thought signing Ehrhoff for $4M was a good idea

I wouldnt doubt it... But again.. my point is that no one knows anything for sure. So to say he WOULDNT have taken the same deal with the Flyers... Nobody knows. All we know is that he signed with the Pens for 1 year 4 mil. Done over with.

EDIT: And never did I say that he didnt take a cut. That is pretty obvious.

- jak521

It's simply common sense of why he took a way below market value deal, and a one year term, to sign with the Pens. If you don't want to see that, not much I can do about it. But it's pretty obvious.
