I have long been a proponent of as much balance across a team as possible and not be married to the one or two "stars" that cost too much to build a team.

with that in mind, I put together a free agent team. All of the forwards averaged less than 16 minutes and the D men 20 minutes of ice time. I also gave everyone a 30% raise and projected goals out to 70 games for those that played less.

I get to a little over 200 goals and a payroll of 66M

Jokinen/Hemsky/Havlat
Penner/Grabovski/Pouliot
Morrow/Bolland/Downie
Conacher/Goc/Moss

Benoit/Stralman
Fayne/Meszaros
Ranger/Mitchell

Hiller/Peters

I am betting the payroll of that team actually comes in closer to 63M which lets me sign my back-up skaters and probably upgrade a D man.

Just for giggles

I think that defense is worse than the Oilers

Why are you bitter at Weber?
- jmatchett383

Not at Weber.

At the Preds.

He's a terrible fit for a team that takes a lot of penalties.
- Feanor

Well, Hartnell is gone, so if they can Rinaldo out of the lineup, they would be looking at killing off a lot fewer penalties.

That team is terrible. Where is Ehrhoff?

My choices would be Chad johnson, Thomas Griess and Al Montoya. All back ups that know thier role and can do it in the limited action.
- J35Bacher

I really want Chad Johnson on this team, despite the fact that he may hide a sharpie in his skate and sign the puck after making a great glove save.

I have interest in Ott as a player, but not at 3M a year.

Well, they're definitely better than the Sabres.

Actually score more than the bottom 6 teams in terms of goals per game, one of which (Wild) made the playoffs.

This lineup would put a team in position to draft Connor McDavid.

Not that bad, but not too far off.
that is the one part of this line up that I would use the extra cap space on

Thorburn is a better player than Shelley. He can get you 4-6 goals and 12-15 points which is much more than the Flyers ever got from Shelley.
- BiggE

The Flyers didn't sign Shelley for goals and points.

More than likely bottom six in the league...maybe not in the East though.
but definitely not the worst team in the league.

I have a feeling Flyers sign Keaton Ellerby at some point in next few days as their 7th defenseman.

It's like a list of players who used to be good and players who never were to begin with. I think you'd be battling Buffalo and Calgary all season long for McDavid.

Factoring in the injury history of that lineup, I'm gonna go ahead and say they'd likely win the NHL draft lottery.

FWIW:

•The Fourth Period: The Ducks are looking for a top-four rugged, stay-at-home defenseman and hope to sign one when free agency starts. Options for that type of player are limited in this free agent class. Anton Volchenkov and Brooks Orpik could be get some interest. They are also looking for a top-six winger and a bottom-six forward. They could look at Martin Havlat, Steve Ott and Milan Michalek.

Doesn't that seem like and ideal trade partner to move Grossmann to for maybe picks or a mid range prospect? Can get some salaray relief and sign cheaper 1 year vet or let a prospect play. Just part of the puzzle
