No it just means you retain their right of first refusal for those players.

In other words, if someone makes an offer sheet you retain the right to match since you qualified the player.

No, they waived Gleason because they have too many D locked up and his cap isn't worth the position he is playing.

Shanahan is obviously leading a charge.

They're going to make a big push for Ehrhoff and Boyle and hopefully get one.

If they land one, Phaneuf will be paired with that person. If they don't, Phaneuf will be paired with Gardiner and they'll look to add more depth.

I like Gleason as a bloke (never met him) seems like a great team first bloke, but other than Clarskon, we need to start getting our contract priorities in order. They are starting to do that. 3rd pair dmen earn less than 2nd pair, earn less than 1st pair. Long time in coming but happy to see it's starting to happen. Same with the forwards. Then you have structure and can build from that.
