Oh exactly! Completely agree, like I've said before, I like phaneuf, but not in his current role.
My fear is his contract could hinder giving Rielly and gardiner the big money they deserve in several years (if they turn out how people are hoping they do)

Phaneuf is a support piece, a 2nd or 3rd dman on a Stanley cup team.
But on a leaf team, he's the centre piece.

Phaneuf needs a support piece....Everything with the exception of the last 15 games last season say's he's a #1 Defenceman.
His $7 million dollar salary is going to look pretty upper average in a couple yrs.

Just quit wasting cap space, come up with an actual plan, quit playing players in positions above where they are suppose to be, play them where they excel and pay accordingly.

It's free agency. Any relatively big name gets overpaid. The only guys who don't get overpaid are the role players like ott. I hope the leafs sign a few of those.

Start with Lupul! He's priority number 1 to move in a deal. He's replaceable, replacing Phaneuf and his 24 hard minutes a night, not so easy
