What would you do?

Not sign Boyle. I really dislike this idea. If we are spending that kinda coin on defense it shouldn't be for Dan Boyle. I just don't like it at all. Spend $4 on Stralman. Keep the D core together. Another $1M towards offense doesn't hurt.

My biggest concern is not 2nd line d-man. Nor is it 4th line forwards.

We can fill in for the former by moving up Klein and finding a 3rd pair D-man.

We can find some viable 4th liners as free agents for affordable prices.

My biggest concern is the 3rd line. We used to have 3 scoring lines. It is going to go from Zucc-Brass-Poop or Hags-Richards-MSL or Kreider-Stepan-Nash (whichever you considered "3rd", and you could make arguments for all 3) to Hags-Miller-Fast.

That is a huge dropoff. You could have made an argument that each of the 3 lines was our top line. That was the "depth" we most benefited from. But if we don't sign someone to fill Richards and Poop's spots, that depth disappears and we are a two line team.

OK, save the money on Boyle, then where would you put it? Do you sign Fayne for a couple of million, and sign some other forward upfront?

Other forward up front. If Pouilot goes, I am looking for a replacement there, or at 3rd line center. Ideally a center that can play wing, and then look for one of Fast Miller or Duclair to take Pouilots spot.

If Fayne can be had for $2.5M I wouldn't mind that if Stralman is gone. Frees up money for another decent forward up front. Leave a few spots for Miller Fast an Duclair to fight over.

Do you guys hate something like this? Obviously, the third line is a big question mark, and the Boyle money on D could be used upfront. Some of the salaries might be a bit generous as well, but let's say Slats could make it work. Also, you could go cheaper on D, and bolster that third line.

Kreider (2.0) Stepan (3.075) Nash (7.8)
Zucc (3.0) Brassard (4.0) St. Louis (5.6)
Hags (2.25) Miller (900K) Fast (900k)
Carter(1.3) Moore (1.7) Maholtra (800k)
Carcillo (800k)

McDonagh (4.7) Girardi (5.5)
Boyle (5.0) Staal (4.0)
Klein (2.9) Moore (1.8)
Diaz (1.5)

Hank (8.5)
Talbot (600K)

Edit: Could also put Fayne on the D instead of Boyle for a couple of million, and make a run at one of the middle class centers instead.

You won't be getting much offense from the bottom 6 at all I feel. But in a cap world, don't know what else could improve it

Here is another alternative, which requires going cheap on D:

Kreider-Step-Nash
Zucc-Brassard-MSL
Hagelin-Legwand-Miller
Fast-Moore-Carcillo/Maholtra

Girardi/McDonagh
Fayne/Staal
Klein/Moore

Some 7th defensemen

I disagree. I'd rather Stralman. Younger, cheaper, we know can play here (we always forget this about NYC for some reason).
- mrhattrick27

Stralman is also long term while boyle is just a stopgap for skjei/mcilrath/bodie/allen.

Better IMO. Not 100% sold on Legwand in particular but someone of that pricetage and I like this better with this one.

I'm just throwing Legwand in there, because he fits that middle class third line center mold, and there are not many more that do.

If there is an out of left field trade to be made this summer, I feel like it is for that 3rd line center spot.

They need for a pp QB is extremely important right now. Otherwise I'd probably agree

Edit:I don't see any chance Stralman is cheaper

- Slimtj100

He won't be cheaper, but I'd rather pay him over Boyle. Boyle best days are so far gone.
