Why are we gonna overpay at a position where it has our most depth in the organization? And not address the needed spots in UFA? The only way it makes sense is if you trade staal or Moore..or even both. I'm just totally confused by this board right now - Slimtj100
I'm on board for your logic. I would rather trade Staal and keep Stralman. I wouldn't part ways with Moore. 1) he's cheap right now 2) having 1 spot to fight for is a good thing but 2 spots open is 1 injury away from being in a bad spot for D. |

Hasn't had 80+ point season since 2009-10. Over his last 212 games he has scored 36 goals. Good for .17 goals per game over that span. - tomburton99
And he's scored over 200 assists in that same timespan. You don't get joe thornton to score goals...why do you keep bringing up his goal stats?
He had more assists this year than any rangers player had points.
If you think that constitutes a washed up useless player with nothing left in the tank, then you have no idea what you're talking about guy.
While he's not a 120 point scorer any more, he was most definitely one of the best centers in the entire league last regular season. You name guys like jagr and selanne and MSL as guys who are still good but thornton is washed up to you even though he outscored all of them? |

It just doesn't make sense to me to have 6 defensemen locked up. Your blocking guys at your own doing, costing yourself a ton of cap space at the same time.
Staals value seems low but losing him for nothing is the worst thing imaginable |

His brother should have to compensate the Rangers for diminishing his value |

I'm may get some hell for this, but they are all overpaid in my opinion. My lord, the money they make. Team first ! Just my opinion. |

I agree that we shouldn't give up assets for him, but to imply that he's washed up is hilarious. |

And the eye injury too.
And I know it's one play, but I'm salty at Stralman...of all people Gaborik overpowered him at the net to score the tying goal in game 5
I'd prefer to keep staal over Stralman if you let me pick one or the other |

Joe Thronton should be outscoring all of those guys. Those guys didn't have, Hertl, Burns, Marleau, Couture and Pavelski helping them get those secondary asisss.. He, Thornton had 19 power play points last year. Derek Stepan had 18. Joe Thonrton is longer a #1 center, especially on the Rangers. Plus he's one of the faces of playoff failures. |

Thornton isn't washed up but he isn't an option. That's old Rangers pre-cap era thinking. Might as well sign Bobby Holik or Petr Nedved again. After all, Nedved made the Olympic team again this year. |

Secondary assists? You do realize he led the league in primary assists per 60 mins, right?
Also, he makes the players around him better. Brent Burns' Corsi percentage is 20 percentage points higher with Thornton on the ice.
Joe Pavelski? Ten points higher.
The highly talented aforementioned Hertl? 13 points. |

Nick asked a question. I just answered it. I wasn't advocating either way. |

I actually was thinking about this recently:
If a hoard of star players decided to forego money and build a dynasty what would it take:
12 forwards @ $3.25M with 2 subs @ $1M.
6 defensemen @ $2.5M with 1 sub @ $1M.
1 goaltender @ $4M with a backup @$1M.
$1M bonus to team MVP
69M total.
$3M+ per year doesn't sound bad to win 10+ cups over a career |

Again he's really good at getting cheap assists. It's not happening for the Rangers. You didn't say it was, let's be clear. But his days as an elite/#1 center are over. I'm happy it's not happening for the Rangers. |

I'd love a player that could get 66 cheap assists
75 point players aren't considered 1st line players anymore. Rangers are facked I guess because by those standards we have 0 1st line players. |

I fully admit I have a blind hatred for Thornton. If here on the Rangers I honestly don't know if I could stomach rooting for the team. But as it looks right now, it looks like it's not happening. I'm thankful for it. |

They might, but the Rangers made up for it in offensive depth on 3 line and great play from 5 solid defenders. Hence the concept of a team. |

Well that's fair enough and I appreciate you admitting a slight bias. I myself am very biased towards certain players like ROR. I'm sure you've noticed
But yea, big joe in the big apple just isn't a reality. |

I'm not even going to make an argument for or against, but why do you have blind hatred towards him. That seems a little strange. Was it the comment he made that the Rangers were soft a couple years back? |

The soft comment, the stroking his man area referring to what he'd do if he were Hertl if he scored 4 goals. Him being the face of the Sharks while they always coming up short. Until this year he always got a pass and never understood why. Just one player that I really, really dislike. |

Ill never understand how one player on any team takes so much heat for a full teams struggles in the playoffs. It happened with Hank here and now Nash (not saying just this board, but the perception is that in this area) The SJ coach took out a cup winner in favor of a rookie in the LA series. A complete panic move, somehow that's jumbos fault? The guy is a lock for 70-75 pts per season. He was never speedy. He has 100 pts in 131 games, that isn't awful |

So if Pouliot goes to Ottawa, what do you guys thing about possibly moving Kreider to that spot? Similar players in the sense that they are not overly skilled puck carriers, not the best on defense but play a hard nosed game and go to the net. Then move MSL to take Kreiders spot. |
