I just spent the last 15 minutes looking through the CBA, and read through every part I could find about compliance buyouts, regular buyouts and free agency, and I couldn't find anything specific.
In the Standard Player's Contract has this line:
(e) Upon termination, the Player shall immediately be an Unrestricted Free Agent and shall no longer be obligated to perform under this SPC.
To sum things up, I have no idea of the answer - rival22
Thanks, rival. I'm going to go on the assumption that he is now an UFA.....maybe. |

If the controlling team doesn't qualify them as an RFA, then yes. - Reverend Killtaker
Yes, 5PM eastern time is the deadline to submit qualifying offers. |

Easiest way to clarify this is if some team signs a recently bought out player before noon tomorrow |

At the right price, I would look at him. - rival22
He makes 4.33 right now and didn't have that much success over the past four seasons, sparing one season, so I bet a deal in the 4-4.5 range could nab him. It also depends on if he is sick of Ottawa and just wants out. |

Even better if that 'some team' were us. |

Yeah, plus you never know what putting Hornqvist with Malkin or Crosby might do for his offensive output. He put up 20+ in the offensive black hole that is Nashville. Really wouldn't be surprised to see him score more goals than Neal this season. - cap1681
Very surprisingly I saw an analysis about the "black hole" of Offensive numbers in Nashville. It compared a bunch of players that played in Nashville and other citities, including Steve Sullivan. Every single player had higher point totals in NASHVILLE than their other teams. Really weird... |

Why the hell did Yzerman trade Purcell for a guy he had to retain 1/3 of the salary for? Crombeen's useless, but its still cheaper to just buy Crombeen out and dump Purcell for a pick if he really wanted to clear space
Kind of puzzling from Yzerman |

Apparently he's a hard worker, but his stats read like Brandon Sutter's from this year (and Sutter's BEST linemates were Gibbons and Megna). He's also not a defensive guy at even strength. I don't really understand the move unless we're dangling Sutter. - cygnus41
You don't dangle Sutter in lieu of the guy we got from Nashville. Sutter is a much better player.

I know CH had a long contract, but his cap was only $4, was his play that bad? Buff needs to hit the floor what was the reason behind the buyout? - sammy87
Have no clue. Very puzzling. He is a solid hockey player and his cap hit isn't bad. That said, his trade value probably wasn't as high as many believe due to that contract he had. He is 31 now, I believe 32 when the season starts and he was on the books for 4.1 or 4.2, something like that for the next seven years. Unless there is an expiration date on the compliance buyouts that I don't realize, keep him for a few more years to help with the cap floor and then buy him out in three years or so.
Someone will get a pretty good player; give up nothing and at a pretty good price.

He won't get five million. He will likely get four. After being tossed around and having a weak playoff performance I don't see him getting full value. |

Ask and you shall receive. I sent Yohe, Rossi and Dejan a tweet asking them the status of the RFA's 15 minutes before Yohe tweeted that. |

I wonder if roles were taken into consideration. With Hornqvist the roles would be equal, but was a guy there playing top line minutes/PP and on his other team playing 2nd or 3rd line and not getting PP time? So many variables there. |

I saw this:
"Anyway, Spaling does have this type of two-way grit, offense and versatility that is tough to find in the NHL."
I think his play last year raised some eyebrows...but the question is, will he ever be better than a 3rd liner?
Maybe he is Dupuis replacement...who will end up along side Crosby someday...please see I am half joking here...but just saying...Sid may be a guy that always ends up playing better with those types of players on his line.
If you look back a Neal's numbers before he came to Pittsburgh...they are very much like Hornqvist's.
Neal's point per game play while he was here exceeded expectations (I'm pretty sure)...maybe Hornqvist manages to do something similar here? |
