Murray's middle finger to Bettman.

Change the lottery rules? Fine. I'm not hiding the fact that we're tanking then.

I think bottom 10 teams should get one ball each to get rid of tanking. 10 even chances at top pick

This isn't the first time the NHL has tweaked its lottery system. And it's not anywhere near the first time either lottery league team (the other being the NBA, who is most likely going to tweak it again soon as well) has done it.

It's rules like putting in this recapture penalty retroactively that make the NHL a "garage league" as Mario Lemieux likes to put it.

He was really good this year.

Numbers on the worst scoring team in decades won't reflect that in the numbers

So another team will have 24 hours to claim him off waivers. That could happen, they will be paying more for him once he hits the UFA. Then Pegula wont have to pay him the rest of his contract and the recap will be someone else's problem.
- Themomentgood

Wrong. He declined waivers and has been bought out.

And even if he was traded and did retire early, the recap is still very much Buffalos problem. That was the whole point of buying him out.

Here's my question: if he were waived, accepted waivers, and then claimed, would the same penalty situation apply?

I love when folks that only look at stat sheets comment on his play . You need to watch the actual games . He turned the corner and dominated games last year under Nolan . He is now the cornerstone of the defense. He is not being moved

To my knowledge, yes. You guy's signed him to the contract. If he retires early, the recapture penalty is your problem.

His play, while greatly improved, did not increase his trade value that much, not yet. He needs to do it consistently, as in multiple years in a row for that to happen, something that he has yet to achieve.
