Jay Greenberg was the best Flyers beat writer
We had some communication back in the days before the web ( on paper, letters in envelopes) about a mutually disliked hockey scribe. It was in the late 70's early 80's. He is a guy I would love to sit down and talk about the game with over dinner and few beers

True, but we'd first have to move out Vinnie, then we'd have to court and sign Ehrhoff, then we'd be over the cap again and probably have to move Streit, maybe getting screwed by GM's who know we are against the cap and bleed out some picks or prospects. All this within the next 3 days. Honestly, if we can get rid of Vinnie, I'm more concerned with getting a scoring Left wing and decent Backup Goalie than making a slight upgrade at D. Let's change from the Homer method of swinging for the fences and just take the high percentage play.

They wouldn't have to do it in the next 3 days, but it would take some maneuvering.

Cant say in public.

I dont know the statue of limitations for libel, or if he changed his opinion of the guy over the years.

I don't think its about what the skills of Grossmann and Gleason are.

Instead its about the sweater they wear.

If Gleason was on the Flyers we would be reading pages of BS about how he is the best thing since sliced bread.

- flyer_nutter

The flip side of that is pages of BS about how bad the Flyers are, and how many wrong moves they make. Such as a player they just drafted described as "meh"!

And it terms of Gleason and Grossmann. It's simply about Grossmann being a better player.

Another dimension that Grossmann is has is the (kinda obvious) support of the coaching staff that keeps running him out there. The coaching staff clearly sees something in his game they like.

They have until the start of the season to be under the cap. And if there's any truth to rumors, Vinny could be gone by Tuesday.

Adding a scoring LW is swinging for the fences more than adding a UFA defenseman who would immediately step in and be one of the best defensemen on the roster. Ehrhoff is a bit more than a slight upgrade.

- Jsaquella

I'm sure there are Buffalo fans who would love to disagree with your assessment of Ehrhoff. But let's just say even if I did agree with you, what pull does Philly have to sway him over say Detroit, who would probably overpay for his services as they still need to fill a Lidstrom sized hole in their lineup. Or almost any number of other teams who could outspend us for his services. It only costs money is the argument that's gotten us Streit, MacDonald and all sorts of contracts everyone's upset about.

I'm not saying this would not be a good thing to look into, but I think it's a lot of maneuvering to get to, and like Suter & Parise we don't even know if he's interested yet. We'd be fools not to inquire, but I don't see the fit from his side.

Why is Panaccio saying if the Flyers can't trade VL by 7/1 they buy him out. I thought his trade value goes up slightly July 2nd due to the 2 million bonus payment?

Point, but the Vinnie situation does need to get resolved. Until that happens, I find it hard to figure out exactly where we should push to get better, or if we can just get under the cap.

Getting under the cap isn't an issue. And I agree the Lecavalier situation does need to get resolved.

Most Buffalo fans I talk to recognized he was the best defenseman on a bad team. Most others I talk to who follow the league feel he's a very solid number 2 defenseman. It's not really arguable that he's used in all situations, because he is.

And yes, he may well end up with another team. Because he is the best all around UFA defenseman and other teams can offer more money.

Neither Streit or MacDonald cost the Flyers nothing but money. In both cases the Flyers traded for those players, expending assets. In the case of Streit, it was a trade for rights, but a trade none the less. Also, FWIW, I'm ok with the Streit signing.

MacDonald conceding the blue line is a documented stat. Please don't tell "every situation is different" because the sample size is large enough. It's like the people who say "global warming is a hoax. It's cold as poop today."

I really think this team has too many one dimensional defenseman and they're paying a lot of money for them. They have situational players playing in ALL situations.

I'd be very happy if they moved AMac to create room to sign Erhoff. Erhoff is an upgrade, and hopefully by the time his play starts to deteriorate, Morin, Ghost, Hagg and/or Sanheim are ready to step up and replace him

Because you can't buy him out after 7/1 and Panaccio is a "Sky is falling" kind of writer. So Pessimistically you'd have to entertain the certainty that the Flyers won't be able to trade Vinnie, cause he's the worst kind of a signing, one made by Homer. That they will have to buy him out and prove what a horrible GM Homer was.

Yeah, he's way off base on this. The Flyers could eat $2 million a year and get some assets back and it would still be better than the buyout.

4.4 million for a 24 year old player who's never reached 20 in his career and is a huge -77 for his career.
