They need to bring down the salary cap for their team... that is what made the trade for Umberger so strange.

Should have just traded Hartnell for a draft pick???

- jimmc7722

My guess is that that wasn't an option in the offers they got. Hartnell's deal is fine now, but in two or three years, it's a potential albatross. They may well have not received an offer where they could just get a pick without taking on a contract in return or had the other team demand they eat some of Hartnell's cash.

They may well have just like Umberger. Despite his issues and decline in Columbus, he's more versatile than Hartnell and more disciplined. He's also a better skater. Those items and the shorter deal make it sort of a lateral move.

I could live with VL for Upshall. They could always buy out Upshall and drop his cap hit to 1.16 for 2 years. I'd rather have that over eating part of VLs deal for 4 more years

Does the bonus part of Timonen's salary count against the flyer's 10% summer overage?
- FlyersSteve118

Nope. If they Flyers are over the cap, they can slide his bonus to next year.

No. Those would count against the team next summer, assuming he reaches them (which he most likely will).

That's another option in an Upshall deal.

I don't think Columbus woulda done it for a pick with Hartell's long term cap hit. They were gonna have to take back a bad contract. They just took back a much shorter one.

I've watched your crusade for read and I actually agree with you. I know he's undersized but good hands and wheels. I think you are right and he can be used as a top 6 forward. I think that the issue were going to face now is depth because Hexy has to pare the roster down. If Vinny and another player are gone for cap relief, then we might have to use akeson and Laughton this year just because they are cheap.
- Hextall271

I'm expecting Laughton to be on the team regardless. Akeson is in the mix and Bellemare as well. The latter has a great cap hit and if he can come over and be solid it will be a huge help.

This sounds like a good deal to me. Just I thought that Vinny was quoted on saying he wanted to stay in the east next season?
- FlyersSteve118

That might be the rub, although Nashville is a West team

I'm really starting to think that although the Vinny signing looks like another Holmgren blunder it might make sense to give it another try.....
It's up to the coaching staff to put Vinny in places where he can succeed . I don't think he's washed up, but he will have to play better next year. Hextall may have to look elsewhere to dump salary.....it will be interesting in the coming days to see what quality offer the Flyers made for the #1 pick....and if it would have solved some of the cap issues they face.
Thx for the great work at the draft

And I'm sure if someone had offered a draft pick for Hartnell then they would have.

Flyers still have other holes to fill and have to deal with a very tight cap. Vinny needs to go.

Where can he succeed? He's basically limited to playing second line center (and he was ineffective with Schenn & Simmonds last year) or first line RW. In both those scenarios, he's blocking or moving a young player who is either better or at least more comfortable at the position.

If the Flyers do adopt a system and style that emphasize skating and possession, Vinny doesn't fit.

I'm sure it's been talked about but is there any speculation as to who is gonna backup mase? With the cap mess were in I'm kind of expecting ray won't be back and well have to go with a 500k guy which is not a situation that I like. Even though I have great faith in mase, I think we need a guy who can play more than 10 games.

I don't disagree ...but....then why was this guy signed 12 months ago ? What's changed ? Whom was was Vinny brought in for to replace 12 months ago ? I can't believe there wasn't a better plan then this ?

I think Kane is skilled as heck but the attitude worries me. For someone like that I don't gut the roster to acquire him

At the end of the day you have to drawl a line in the sand as to what you are willing to give up to move him. Yes it is obvious it is addition through subtraction but the real question is: what are you willing to give up to move him? I think most posters here have come to a point where the answer is just about anything. IMHO it is an unproductive way to deal with the situation. If the price is too high then hold onto him and find relief elsewhere. He isn't going to make or break our season by himself next year. Again he is obviously not a positive asset.

I think the real question for posters is what is the max you would give up to trade him?

I would say a Cousins like prospect or a third and cringe. That is with zero cap coming back.

There's a few cheap guys that could be good. Al Montoya, Chad Johnson, Thomas Greiss. Maybe Devan Dubnyk as a reclamation project signs for a smaller one year deal after finishing the year as a third or fourth goalie.

I'm guessing that the plan was to move B. Schenn to LW and that Laviolette saw Vinny as a shooter that they could feed for one timers. Unfortunately Lecavalier didn't find a spot where he was effective under Berube.

The other thing is, Vinny could easily have been an Ohhhh Shiny! knee jerk reaction to a missing the playoffs.

That's my point exactly.....it also doesn't make future signings of vets look very good when we give up after one year.....now would I trade him if it made team better ? Sure, but it appears the opposite is going to happen.
Oh and I'll try not to share your logic by posting on your behalf !

There's absolutely a line in the sand. When you're looking at what is essentially addition by subtraction, you must take care not to subtract too much. I'm thinking a pick, at most and maybe eating a small bit of money.

There'd be no way I trade a significant pick and prospect to move him. I'd just wait until a buyout became more tenable or where it got to a point where enough of the money had been paid a budget team would take him for help reaching the floor.
