Can Flyers sign him now since he's bought out ?
- Winning

Sure. But the most they can offer him right now is about $5.7mm, even with the 10% overage. They would need to move money to offer him more, and it's probable that he will get more.

Hypothetical, which is the better option

Ehrhoff - 5 years at $5.5 million/yr - no assets to acquire
Bogosian - 6 year at $5.1 million/yr- B. Schenn +

I think we could get Ehr for 5. I'd do it for that much, too.

FWIW, I don't hate MacDonald. I hate his contract & the haste at which the Flyers signed him to it. Guys like Ehrhoff become available and then you have no room to go after them.

Yes, MacDonald was fairly solid after coming over. But he was far from great. Don't like the term 4/5? Fine he's a middle of the road defenseman who can play on a second pair or anchor a third pair. He's got decent mobility, is ok with the puck and a solid defender. He could be better in the neutral zone, but he's still a NHL player.

But a guy like Ehrhoff is a top pair guy. Being able to add him would really solidify the defense and really allow time for the kids to develop.

I dont hate MacDonald either, but if you had your choice on where you were spending around 7 mil per year for the next 5- 7 years and making whoever your top paid defensemen, would you prefer Ehrhoff , Phaneuf, or a lesser deal for the large man Buff or Bogosian. I really want nothing to do with the latter 2

Sheesh, what a bunch of Debbie downers. Am I the only one with faith? The Flyers aren't in hell because of the Lecavalier situation. He wasn't terrible last year. Hopefully he's hearing all this criticism and will use it as motivation. I think he can still be pretty effective. It won't be the end of the world to see him play with Schenn and Simmonds again. There's a pretty big hole on the top line left wing right now, but since when have the Flyers just shrugged their shoulders, said oh well and stood pat when they have a need? They're not going to sit there with their hands in their pockets on Tuesday. Sooner or later, the Flyers will get their guy. They might not get Vanek or Moulson and I don't even want them to. But they will sign or trade somebody next week. Since when do the Flyers stand pat on these kind of things? Uh, never. They're not going to be in a situation where they find themselves weak and nothing to do about it. There's always a plan. Did Holmgren make some mistakes? Absolutely. Did he "destroy the team", or "put us in cap hell"? I don't believe so. They have a pretty solid core and a bright future in my opinion. The core of Giroux, Voracek, B Schenn, Simmonds, Couturier and Read is a solid one that's only getting better. Hopefully all of them are staying here for a while too. Mason is the best goalie they've had in a long time also. He has the ability to be a great goalie for many, many years. I think their biggest problem is every one of their defensemen is overpaid. That's something that does concern me, but not to the point where I'm panicking and thinking next year might be a wash. No no no. Berube won't let that happen. I know this is a site where we discuss rumors and player movement and things like that, but remember the Flyers lost to the Rangers by one goal in game 7 just a few weeks ago. They barely lost to a team that made it to the finals and I think the Flyers would have put up a much better fight in the finals against L.A. The only thing that's happened since then is they traded a slow/aging Hartnell for Umberger. I don't think that move sets them back that far either. The Flyers have a good, promising young team that's only getting better, (hopefully). And with Hextall and Berube manning the ship, (which I love btw) the Flyers will one again be competitive and have a shot at it all like they do every year. Go Flyers.

It'd depend on what assets the others cost. Ehrhoff is a UFA. Sign him to a 4 year deal and you buy time for the kids to develop and keep B. Schenn, Couturier, Simmonds & Coburn. If you go after Byfuglien, Phaneuf or Bogosian you're trading at least some of those guys

I agree, the question is what does Hexy think of Ehrhoff ?

Moving LeCavalier and taking back no salary or a player that is one year and can be bought ought gives the wiggle room and time to trade one of the most expensive middle of the road defensive line ups in hockey

I was willing to give up a first rounder and Hagg/Leier for Ehrhoff, but that was for his 4million dollar cap hit.

He will probably get between 5.5 and 7 in free agency. Which can be hard to match unless we move some space.
