True I just think you wouldn't miss him and if he's not on LITR, that 4m in cap space would pretty useful for the leafs.

Simmons is dumb. With Rielly and Gardiner the Leafs have mobility on the defence. Phaneuf is a puck carrier and passer. They need tough guys who play hard in the mix.

In terms of talent I'd put Polak behind Gardiner, Rielly, Franson and Phaneuf, but it's entirely possible he can be a good physical compliment to a more flashy defender.

One good thing" Polak played a huge chunk on the PK for the Blues. They were ranked 2nd best. Leafs were 3rd worst.
