The only place I've seen that is Ek and I never take anything he says seriously. It would be a disaster for our cap. Impossible actually unless other salaries get moved. We have enough mid-30's wingers IMO.
- madmike71

We could probably move Sutter and Martin as part of that deal.

Hornqvist - Crosby - Bennett
Kunitz - Marleau - Malkin

What do we make of the reports of Pittsburgh targeting Marleau?

WPG apparently didn't want Neal. Kane talks are silly though.

Marleau talk to Pittsburgh is silly as is Kane.

Not for Marleau. However, the last thing we need is a Patrick Marleau with our cap situation though.

If the Pens trade Martin then they get a player who is better than any available UFA for 1,666,667M/year through 2017.

yes. but they also lose paul martin.

which i understand d prospects, and all. but that will be devastating this year.

if you move paul martin now, you are essentially saying this year is strictly a bridge year to retool.

and if thats the case, a guy like marleau makes no sense to me anyway

Possibly have SJ retain some salary?

I don't know how salary retention works. I just don't.

The next two seasons should be focused on learning the system and developing the D. Pittsburgh isn't going to win the Stanley Cup before then. I still think the Penguins need to change goalies before they'll win as well, but I think they may be thinking that a signed Marleau will be more of an asset after this season than a UFA Martin.

Name one single thing the fans of this team have to be positive about in the past 5 years, name one thing; just one and I will admit everything is sunshine and rainbows.
- nbartley9

That your name is not the New York Islanders.

On a serious note we have a huge pool of young defense men, Kris Letang came back from a stroke, we are not far off from a cup team (Considering we have a structure that atleast makes the playoffs every year). Now that I answered you please explain how we got screwed over so bad with the Neal trade.

(estimations for 2014-15)
SALARY CAP: $69,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $67,575,458; BONUSES: $68,333
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $1,424,542

1.4M in space allows for either a vet depth dman all year to help the Maatta injury hump, or can be saved for a dealine winger. 1.4M in space means a 5M player at the deadline.

Edit- Give Bennett a solid 15-20 games with Sid and see if he can break out, if not gives Dupuis a chance to regain his stride and he can go back on the top line until the deadline.

- Willaged

You've been putting up some great posts...keep it up. This lineup is so much more balanced than what we START every season with.

Ok fine, you guys are right; this organization is exactly where I want it to be while we have the 2 most dominant players in the world; losing to the freaking Rags in disgraceful fashion; and unloading a 40 goal scorer for two turds. Jackpot!
- nbartley9

you said name one thing, done. now apologize and cheer up! Neal deal was pretty decent. his value wasn't what pens fans may have felt it was.

MM, for some reason I can see this happening. I don't know why. Ek is always wrong (unless he gets lucky) and the only value from this site are the bloggers, but I just have a gut feeling.

That said, for it to go down the Sharks would eat some cap and we'd give up assets. However, Marleau at this point is actually good value for his contract (not in two years though). He was top 10 in a stat called goals produced and has a lot of character and speed. He, or Sharp, are the two guys I'd give up assets for and move salary.

Chris, I agree it wasn't value we expected...we're spoiled with the Shero "big splash" trades. However, I've seen the comparison of Hornqvist to Kunitz, and agree with the comparison. I actually think PH is the more impactful player.

That said, who's been more valuable to the Pens...Kuni or Neal? I say Kunitz. If we just got another winger like him, only younger and a bit more edgy, I'd take that any day. As a matter of fact, I believe Kunitz is the prototypical winger we need to play with Sid and Geno. I LOVE THIS TRADE!

I am O.K. with the trade. I just wish Rutherford could made a part of the deal that Nashville had to take Scuds or the very least Craig Adams to free up more cap space.

One more thing, since I'm bored and just catching up. Apparently Spaling's biggest issue is consistency. There is upside to his offensive game and he can play a shut down role. He just doesn't do any on a consistent basis hence his overall possession numbers. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt at 25 years old and having played on a somewhat offensively inept team.

William DePaoli @TIOPS_DePaoli · 3m

On the Brodeur reports, my understanding is Pat Brisson reached out to Penguins few days ago. Doubt there's real interest on Pens end.

EDIT: William DePaoli @TIOPS_DePaoli · 2m

That said, Penguins inquired about Jonas Hiller on first day of free agent interview process. So doing their due diligence.

It is scraping the bottom of the barrel but I guess Sids health is a positive, I will not agree with the Neal trade being decent, it's not. Not a single hockey person has said anything positive about this from the Pens perspective.

Hornqvist sucks a and is injury prone, we gained very little cap space, and we just lost 40 goals a year. Not to mention we very well may have a disgruntled Geno Malkin.

I don't understand the fascination with Hemsky. A lot was made of acquiring Hemsky at last season's deadline, which would have been a mistake. Signing him now would be a mistake. The Penguins got Hemsky last season at the deadline in the form of Beau Bennett.
