the funny thing in listening to button and these guys ... they drool over every single prospect about skill, speed, vision, hockey sense, compete level....and virtually none of them make it long term to the big show.

Whats questionable about the draft?

I agree about the Hartnell trade being questionable.

- PhillySportsGuy

We won't know and won't be able to put a grade on this year's draft until 2017-2018, 3-4 years from now anyways. D-man take longer to make it to the NHL then forwards. I'm still trying to figure out the Umberger trade. I like 2 years less with RJ's contract, his versatily, but he was a buyout candidate and at 4.6M it's ridiculous with the Flyers current cap issues.

We all know the draft is a gamble. Scouts trying to predict the future learning curve and possible potential of player X and Y the probability of them attaining it. The philly picks this year are a bit far from the consensus rankings. But who really knows right ? Sanheim was ranked #8 and #56 depending on the ranking so ....

The 2nd rounder and 3rd rounder are questionable like a lot of picks from a lot of teams.... I thought better ranked guys with better size and stats were still available. But hey, Hextall knows a lot more then I do and has access to a lot more info and scouting reports so wth do I know !

Its fine to question the picks. I just think Hextall has gone in a different direction with the draft. Picked two players under 6' in the 2nd and 3rd round. They went for skill instead of size, toughness and 'energy'

What was the rumored deal?

Harvey Fialkov @hfialkov

Apparently the Flyers offered Panthers Schenn and Vinny but Florida wanted Simmonds. #FlaPanthers

Hawks trade Bolig to Calgary for the 83rd pick

Good move for the Hawks

- PhillySportsGuy

Bollig just re-signed, too.

Now alls they have to do is dump Bickell on the Flames or Leafs.

Skill has been the direction the league has been moving for some time now. Look at how much skill the champions from the past 6 years have. Yeah, they are tough teams, but they beat other teams with skill, rather than just pummeling the teams into submission.

I really wonder if Vinny for Del Zotto is a realistic scenario ? Maybe even adding a pick to make it happen.

Nashville need scoring, reports indicate Laviolette and his system were some of the reasons Lecavalier signed with the Flyers. The Preds have a lot of up and coming D-man. Preds have 17M cap space.

One can hope

We've got a ridiculous amount of D men in the system now. It's going to be interesting to see the balancing act of bringing these guys along.
- hereticpride

We'll be lucky if even 1-2 guys out of the current crop make it as impact players... gotta keep feeding that beast.

I think the idea that good teams have 2 skilled lines and 2 checking lines is gone.

i'd love to have a 4th line that is a defensive specialist line that can do more than give up scoring opportunities, and even be a threat in the offensive zone now and then.

two scoring lines, a 2-way line, and a shut down line would hard to build, but great to watch.

3 skilled lines and a 4th that will be responsible. Brian Boyle would suit that need instead of a Rinaldo. We could even give him 2nd PP minutes if he is looking for more ice time.

i still think the trade was all about Berube wanting a team that plays a more responsible game. They traded 2 less goals for 40 less minor penalties.

Hartnell got a lot of rope from Berube and he used it all. The lack of discipline reached its breaking point.

i know hartnell's numbers will be missed, but im really not going to miss the stupid, momentum killing penalties, and the long stretches of when he becomes invisible.

Lindblom is a powerful skater with a strong, two-way game. He isn't shy to do the dirty work and is a pain to move out from in front of the net. He gets himself open to create offensive chances but isn't overly flashy. (August 2013)

I didn't realize this was sanheim first year in jr. From his highlight video posted earlier I like this pick even more. So glad they went d first again. Next year draft higher end offensive talent. Looking like sanheim& morin could turn into home runs. Add ghost to that and looks like maybe this team is finally learning. In 3-5 years looks like Philly and buffalo very well might be cream of the crop in eastern conference
