Good luck having any depth on your team once you sign Toews and Kane to 24 million between the two.

It'll be the Pens all over again, only worse.

- Sheppy99

Nobody has a crystal ball to know how much they will get and what the cap will go up to over the next few years. Just because the Pens have failed in the playoffs the past few years doesn't mean the Hawks will.

Cup wins don't set the bar,, Justin Williams has 2 and is making less than 4
- tampabaydoompatrol

Just wondering Williams = Stamkos or Towes or Kane

I'm not an advocate for $12 mil. I'm young but I understand negotiations and the concept of "you don't pay sticker price." If the Kane/Toews camp came to the table wanting $12, I expect it to be less. Just saying that I don't expect their contracts to be less than anybody's currently. I think they have earned the right to set the bar this time around.
- PhilMeister89

Of course Kane and Toews start at $12M and the Hawks start at $XXM then negotiations begin. Part of those negotiations include advising them that the Hawks can build a better team if they have more money to do it with. But the pressure on the other side will be the NHLPA who have no vested interest in the teams and want players to make as much as they can. It will be an interesting time to see what the Hawks can build after K&T are signed.

Really?!?!?!? Crosby, Malkin, Kane, Toews and Kesler will wipe out your cap. Who's going to play defense or goalie? You think your team has depth problems now.....

No, I'm saying the negotiations have to involve the salary cap. Each side knows that well.

It comes down to absolute maximum money they want to make versus having a perennial cup contender; period.

This isn't a game of chicken like in MLB which has NO cap. The hard cap is out there, plain and easy for everyone to see.

$12M per and you can cut the 'Hawks chances of a 2016 cup in half, perhaps 2017 too. Sub-$10M and SB suddenly has $4-5M more to work with on those rosters.

- blackhawk24

That's inconsequential. They are asking for $12million. Likely to get $10million. If that kind of money is a dealbreaker, you have to trade them. If it isn't a dealbreaker, you sign them. Which do you do?

If the answer is that you sign them, then you can clearly see where the leverage in this negotiation lies. They would be fools to leave money on the table.

you would hate that though. apparently top heavy teams are doomed.

better to spread your cap around and have a team of second and third line players like the Blues and then sit back and watch the playoff wins start rolling in

You are right, however, cup wins, conn smythes, turning around franchises, olympic medals and being two of the greatest players in your country all before the age of 30 does.

Florida doesn't want another prospect as they have plenty of those in the system. It would take a player like Sharp who can score some goals for the team and provide some sort of leadership.
- BravePackCats27

Agreed.

When I heard today Dale is now in on Kesler I thought that this could end up being a 3 way deal.

I really hope the Hawks aren't following the Detroit model all the way through to the part where they hang on to players past their prime... Bertuzzi, Franzon....

Sharp is at peak and would be a great leader in FL - probably keep Campbell there too... Time to rotate him out as a piece for cap flex and strength at C.

I can't dispute your take....But it is a great comparison to have within the last year in Getzlaf/Perry...But cap will be higher.

So, here is a thought. I know he isn't the problem but Hossa doesn't have an NMC or NTC. Do you think he could be moved to allow for cap and open spot? I know that leaves big shoes to fill but I suppose anything is possible.

How would the 3 way trade work. Florida trades #1 pick for kesler, they flip him to us for sharp and a combination of something else. Or we trade for their #1st pick and flip it to Van for kesler.

In order of importance
Playoff performance
Regular Season performance
compared to peers by position
Hardware
Intagibles, clutch goals/plays

Kane wing / Crosby Center
The real queestion Towes or Crosby. Could argue either way I guess

Stan Bowman on trade talk: There's a lot of things being tossed out there as options. Most of which won't come true.

Sounds like he's keeping expectations in check

The problem is that Hossa's cap recapture penalty is SCARY. If he retires early, the Hawks will pay thru the nose for the cap relief in his first 5 years of the deal. You will likely see Sharp, Bickell, Oduya move before Hossa, because of that cap recapture.

Exactly. After not buying out Hossa, they have married themselves to him for the entirety of his contract - lest they want to get murdered on the cap recapture penalty.

thats no problem Hossa will be productive till hes 40. maybe not as much now but his contribution in the early years of the contract will make up for his 3rd line role he will play in the twilight of his career.

Why wouldn't they like their team? I'm sure everyone has forgotten after 2012 how every said there needed to be MAJOR changes, well guess what? The next season didn't go so bad.
