Now THAT is a steal. Ranked 10th, drafted 24th.

McCann has been on the freefall, most experts were expecting him to drop. I think he's a top20 player in this crop personally. Not sure I'd label that as a steal, that would be Fabbri at #21.

Some actually compare him to Marian Hossa, so I don't think the knock would be his defensive play...

Defensive's play alright, nothing too worrisome. He's much better than guys like Ho-Sang and Goldobin. Kid is willing to learn. Sounds like a player who is rather easy to coach, at least from what his coaches with the Blades were saying.

As for the Russian factor, the fact that he's willing to play in Saskatoon of all places (no offense Pete) says a lot. He got snubbed for the international competitions by Russia for leaving the KHL system too, at least it seems. Timmins suggested so in his interview.

I really wanted us to trade own with this pick if all the interesting players were gone by our pick, luckily Barbashev and Scherbak were still unclaimed. Nikita was one of the few players in that range that were worth. I'm not sure Ho-Sang/Goldobin/Quenneville/Kempe were worth more than two 2nd rounders. That was a good trade by Tampa, they'll have the chance to grab a couple of players who are very similar in terms of potential/likability to make the Pros at #35 and might be lucky too for #57.

Personally, I prefer Dominik Masin, Vladislav Kamenev and Andreas Englund to all four of these players.

Here's the take from the Blades Play-by-play who's also an independent WHL scout on Scherbak

Scherbak is a gifted Russian winger that led the Saskatoon Blades and WHL rookies in scoring this past season. He's got a full arsenal of offensive tools at his disposal including a "heavy" wrist shot with a quick release and some very adept vision and passing ability. He excelled all season at making the players around him better despite not having a ton of help offensively in Saskatoon, especially in the 2nd half of the year. His skating isn't a strength, but it's not a huge weakness either. His top gear is just fine, but he does tend to be a bit slow out of the gate due to having a low and long stride. He has shown the ability to play physical, whether it being taking a hit to make a play or finishing his check when needed, although that part of his game does come with some inconsistency. He's got a high hockey IQ and shows the ability to arrive at the right place at the right time in offensive situations. He comes from an athletic background as his father is a former soccer player, his mother a basketball player, while his sister plays tennis. Throughout the year I heard many rumblings that NHL teams liked him more than Draisaitl, but that was before Leon turned things up in a big way in the second half of the year. There's still many things to like about this player and my jaw wouldn't hit the floor if a team took a shot at him in the top 15 selections.

I like the pick since we got a skilled winger with size but considering the Habs roster, wouldn't Kempe been a better fit?

I don't follow junior hockey, whats the story on Nylander? unless I am reading it wrong he was born in Canada but play in Sweden? did his family move there or did he think that was the best place to develop?

He was born when his father was playing for Calgary. They probably moved back to Sweden when Michael was done with the NHL.

Habs are going to pick Daniel Audette, I can feel it

EDIT: Just looked at his stats, I guess as a late 3rd round pick I wouldn't mind that much

Lernout, eh ben.

Mitch Brown ‏@MitchLBrown maintenant

#Habs Brett Lernout - Defensive d-man. Very physical. Skates quite well and owns a hard shot. Passing needs work. Absolutely a project.
