The most puzzling part was trading purcell (4.5M) for Gagne (4.8M) only to buy out gagne. Why not buy out purcell if it's just cap clearing???

I'm not sure, but apparently both had deals arranged to teams where they wouldn't waive. In Spezza's case, Murray just went out of his way to make him look like an bumhole by letting the media know.
