Where are you going to get a better 2C than Brassard for less than $3.7 million? - Feanor
A guy like Grabovski ($3M) will be out there again this summer... or get a younger/cheaper C in return for Brassard. |

That's a good question -- hell, they shouldn't have him in the first place, because Howson overpaid for Gaborik and Columbus just threw assets at the Rags |

Here is where the flaw is. Call him a 3rd liner all you want. Only Giroux and Couturier play more per game then Read does. Both in total icetime per game, and in ES icetime per game. - MJL
Okay. He's still a bottom-9 winger in my opinion. But you can throw him out there in any situation, whether defending a lead or needing a goal and he'll give you a shot, where as most players will get sparser time given the particular situation. |

That entire exchange was kind of juvenile... was like somebody reading HB out loud. But damn did he pounce there. |

I think the amount of ice time he gets shows how important of a player he is to the team. And the fact that he puts up the number of goals and points that he does, with the match ups and starts that he gets, along with little PP time. Shows how valuable, and how good of a player he is. I don't think he'd be an ideal first line Winger, but right now, he's as good a choice as any, with the current makeup of the team. On the flip side, I don't disagree with anyone who says they don't want to change his role because of how effective he is in it. That's hard to argue against. |

Maybe he meant in terms of where they land on our depth chart? - Tomahawk
I know what he meant, what else could he mean?
I'm gonna throw out some thoughts on our defense if I may.
There seems to be a lot of worry surround Kimmo Timonen. You wanted him back but now that he's signed for less, you expect a lesser role for him. I don't agree with this. I believe Kimmo Timonen the player took a pay cut for a chance at winning a Stanley Cup. He gave the team cap flexibility so that his dream could come true. This has nothing to do with his role or how old he is. If the Flyers didn't want him back, he wouldn't be here. If Timonen didn't want to come back, he wouldn't be here. As long as Timonen is playing on our top pair, starting on the Power Play and starting the Penalty Kill, he's our number one. I think he should be allowed to be our number one defenseman until he proves he can't do it anymore. It's an 82 game schedule. Could Kimmo Timonen role change this season? Absolutely! Scott Hartnell was apart of that pretty consistent number one Power Play unit for the past 3 seasons but now he's moved on. Mark Streit is our best offensive defenseman, so I would expect adjustments. It doesn't mean Kimmo Timonen and Brayden Coburn will be split up. It doesn't mean Timonen won't continue to see the toughest opponents on the other team's top line. The only thing that's changed for Timonen is he's one year old and he's getting paid less. He should do what he does until he proves he can't do it anymore.
As for our defense as a whole, I'm not sure it should be looked at as a numbers game or a depth chart. I don't want to say we have an odd collection of desensemen but we don't have a great balance. However, we do have an NHL caliber defense and the Flyers seem to make it work. I wouldn't go as far as underrate it, especially by numbering each defenseman.
If I did number each defenseman, Streit wouldn't be number 2 on the depth chart and Timonen would not be 4th. |
