Vinny is not a 4th line player. Can we stop saying this already? If the season started tomorrow, Berube wouldn't have him on the 4th line.

Neither is Stalberg. But Stalberg is a natural LW with tons of speed, something we desperately need.

- mochoson

I guess I was speaking more in terms of depth charts... as it stands, Vinny is our 4C; Stalberg is their 4LW.

No doubt in my mind Stalberg can come here and earn 3m a season playing on our 2nd and 3rd line. He can produce offense with skilled players. I can't say the same about Vinny: I don't think hes capable of earning his 4.5 million on this team with the centers we have, and he cant do it at wing.

Not to mention, Stalberg doesn't have a NTC. If we got him and he had a decent season, we may be able to unload him next summer if need be to a team that needs a decent player and needs to reach the cap floor.

- mochoson

Seems unnecessarily risky and contingent on a lot of auspicious outcomes (players turning it around) for it to be worth all the effort.

NSH could easily just keep Stalberg AND grab one of the UFA scoring C's on the market at an even more favorable rate than a salary-retained Vinny -- Jokinen, Roy, Grabo, Richards.

Flyers are probably better off holding on to Vinny and riding him for another year before unloading him next summer when his contract becomes much more palatable.

Mediocre players don't score 20 goals in the NHL.
- MBFlyerfan

In and of itself, 20 goals doesnt mean much. He was brutal in his own end and at even strength. He has slowed down considerably. He'll be 35 next year. He can't be used on the PK.

You know what? I don't think its a stretch at all to say that he is now in the mediocre phase of his career.

If Schenn would be moved to first line LW then I'd be ok with keeping Vinny and having him as the 2C.

That's 100% what I see happening.

We would only be making a similar deal next off-season. The reality is it's not a good contract to have on this roster, and other teams know that. If we can at all trade him at any point during this deal, the return is going to suck and we likely eat a bit of salary. It is what it is.

I'd rather unload him now if possible. The sooner we do, the better our future financial situation looks.

Thats probably very accurate given his defensive liability.
With his back problems, he was having as much trouble staying on his skates as Hartnell did

He was a great player at one time, but there were enough 20 goal scorers over the past 20-30 years who were lousy in their own end/ minus players etc.

I hope that if he is not traded that he is either 100% or is bad enough to retire (under 35 contract)

Plus if he doesn't rebound then you have even less to sell. Right now you can sell20 goals on limited minutes. If he plays on the 2nd line and only gives ten goals and plays worse then what.

I am one that thinks there will be a deal.

I have doubt Vinny will produce, but like you said, you can sell him even off the season he just had.

He has another injury riddled, sub-50 point season.....anoter year older......not so easy.

As of today, his contract still has $16.5M in real salary over 4-years left on it.

On July 2, 2015, after his last large round of bonuses had been absorbed, it would be $8.5M over 3-years.

He couldn't possibly play any worse than he did this past season (right?), so it would seem he would be much easier to move next summer. Flyers might not even have to retain any salary or accept any bad contracts in return.

I really hope they go after Jussi. I think he is a type of player they could really maximize with G.

Edit: I wonder if they are talking with any agents now, aren't they allowed? Just not sign the contract till the 1rst I believe.

He could look good on the first line. It would allow voracek to drop down to schenns line. He's going to get too much term and money though

Yes. But if they have already talked to the agent then I got to assume someone has talked about Vinny to the Flyers. You wouldn't want to go to him and ask if he would waive his NTC without having an idea of someone being interested.
