They could if they don't see themselves spending to the cap. The extra 2.5 cap space surely would mean a top asset coming the other way.

We flip Sharp and Stanton for 5th overall and rights to Dan Boyle.

We flip 5th + 6th + Leddy for 1st overall and 3rd.

I see zero logic in retraining any kind of salary when the contract is pretty darn cheap in comparison to similar players. I would think all or most teams would be salivating over getting Kesler for a mere $5 million for the next 2 seasons. Keeping one cent of his salary would be ridiculous.

I completely agree, unless the other team was willing to overpay for the extra cap relief. On the surface it doesn't make any sense at all but if they received an offer they couldn't refuse and again, they weren't going to spend to the cap anyway, there could be some merit.
