there are some who think he's getting 7.

I think that would be a gross overpayment, but the market is such that UFA defensemen do get grossly overpaid.

- Doc_Sarcasm

He might not get 7, but it's going to be in that neighborhood.

I'm fairly certain its going to be 6+, regardless of what I think of him as a defenseman.

It's reliable to a point. What did you do with Pronger?
- MJL

What did Markov just sign for? Wasn't it about 5.75? Niskanen has to be thinking he can get 6.5 to 7

I think he's going to get in the neighborhood of 6.5-7. And seeing how Rutherford hinted he's going to test free agency, someone's going to overpay for him. I'd like him for 5 but I know that's not going to happen given the trend for UFA defensemen

I don't like that deal either. Too many years, too much money for a guy who's 35, and has lost some tread off the tires.

It's a catch 22. They just made a nice playoff run, and they believe they're in a position to win.

I think MacDonald is good to stay. It wasn't like Hextall wasn't here when that deal got done. i am sure he had some input. If I had to guess maybe it would be either Grossmann or Schenn.

If they could the deal with Nashville and get back Del Zotto i think it would give the D a solid possible young offensive dman. Your hope would be he would finally play to his potential. He had some good showings in NY before he started to struggle

- J35Bacher

Adding Del Zotto would bring another somewhat undersized (by today's NHL standards) defenseman who is good offensively but not very good in his own end of the ice. If the Flyers didn't have Streit or didn't already have three defensemen who are either undersized (Timonen, Streit) or under-muscled (MacDonald), then fine. But Del Zotto would not be the right addition to the current mix.

For much of this past season, Dallas had 4/6 of its blueline consisting of undersized puck movers and/or offensive defensemen with no physical game. They got manhandled down low in the defensive zone because only Brenden Dillon could handle those trench battles against big forwards.

Yes, the Flyers need to add some more mobility and puck movement. But they can't tilt too far toward being small and finesse oriented either.

There are technicalities involved with LTIR. With the roster you proposed, the Flyers will not be able to carry Pronger's Cap hit on the roster until the first day of the season in order to maximize the LTIR cap space.

"When you look at a move you look at the future". Wow, thinking of the future when making a trade...sounds like a culture change for the Flyers.
- Dkos

I don't think we can underestimate the influence Hartnell's lack of discipline had on this trade.

If we take last years numbers and replace Umbergers penalty minutes with Hartnell, that is many many times less shorthanded over the course of a season.

You get this:

RJ: 74 games 18 goals 26 PIM
SH 78 games 20 goals 103 PIM

I think the last stat says it all. Hartnell took a LOT of dumb undisciplined penalties, and it never got better. I think Berube had enough.

Agreed. And this is pretty much what I posted last night. The next Flyers defenseman added needs to have both puck moving skills along with being able to handle the physical aspects of the game in the corners and around the net. Subtracting Grossmann for a player like Del Zotto would not be a good move. Having the defensive mix to far to the finesse side, is just as bad as lacking puck movers. That's the point the Flyers are at now.

I get what your saying but i wouldn't consider him small. 6ft about 200. I get what your saying about the mix but the league is a skating league. I would be ok with Del zotto and as he is an RFA sign him to a one year prove it deal. Next year you can reasses when Kimmo is gone and also determine what prospects might be ready.

If not del Zotto then hopefully maybe they can get a wing back in the deal, maybe a guy like Stalberg or i am not sure if they would be availbe but maybe Nystrom or Bourque

Lindros got me into hockey, but I was moved to tears when Forsberg retired for good, when I realized I'd never see him play hockey again. Even before he came back, he was my favorite non-Flyer of all time.

Good point. I wonder what this means for a guy like Rinaldo, who drew some penalties, but also took some dumb ones too.

Glad the Hartnell trade is playing well with our superstar captain.

Who needs good dressing room cohesion? These guys are all robots anywhere. Hope the Flyers can continue to make moves without considering their effect on team morale and look at strictly on-ice maneuvers.

Let's look at two of the biggest moves Holmgren made as a GM. Trading Richards and Carter. Would those deals be classified as for now, or for the future?
- MJL

Just making a joke. Sorry if I touched a nerve. I have no idea what was in Homers mind with those trades. One minute those two guys were the future of the Flyers and the next they were traded. Seems to me they have had a history of impatience with young talent and a bad habit of signing guys to contracts that are way to long. So, yes, I'd say the Flyers have been guilty of not considering the future enough.

And if it leads to a cup I am sure Giroux will get over it. Cohesion is nice but i also think sometimes the whole locker room thing can be overrated. They understand the business part. You can't just leave a team alone and not make moves because of hurting peoples feelings.

Could it be possible that VL goes to Nash and we get MDZ,then flip him a deal at the draft for a a pick. Still young and decent offense. Could get like a a 3rd maybe a 2nd.
