I would love to see Jerome Iginla as a Flyer. I would love to see a player of his status play with Claude Giroux. However, I don't see the fit. Pushing one of Simmonds or Voracek back to a checking role isn't a smart idea. Voracek and Simmonds are top six forwards, the same way Hartnell was. Heck, the development of Brayden Schenn or Matt Read could get pushed back as wingers as well.
- SuperSchennBros

What are you talking about? If you move Vinny you can have this:

Inginla - Giroux - Voracek
Winger - Schenn - Simmonds
Umberger - Couturier - Read
Raffl - Laughton - Bellemore

No one pushed back

Tallon was just telling Duthie last night that he's very happy with his organizational C and D depth and his needs are on wing.

Also, Ellis is terrible.

Ron Hextall is placing a (very reasonable) wager on Brayden Schenn having more to give than he has already. I think you can forget about someone like Jarome Iginla showing up this year.

by signing Iginla we wouldn't be dropping Simmonds or Voracek to a checking role.

Iginla - Giroux - Voracek
Simmonds - Schenn - Read
Umberger - Couts - Penner
Straka - Laughton - Raffl

I would trade Vinny and sign Iginla and Penner

So that implies that with no competition, Edmonton just willfully overpaid the player, with no insight into the salary market at all? And what a player is worth?
- MJL

No.. it shows me that they have serious hope that he can play a full season at the level he did in 2011-12. They ( like the Flyers) put themselves in a position of weakness by trading for him prior to UFA. They liked him, made him their priority, and then signed him to a deal paying 2x what he was making in his last contract. In the mean time, all of his numbers have steadily declined, and he is now more of a 3rd pairing guy.

Technically, if you wanna break it down even more.. he was 7th among d-men in TOI for the Blue Jackets last year.. So, yea.. a 4.5 million dollar reserve d-man.

There are two options. Pens and Redwings went with option 2 this year, Flyers and Bruins picked option 1.

http://www.capgeek.com/fa...injured-reserve-LTIR-work

If you are building a roster that won't be under the cap including Pronger's hit, then you want to exceed the cap by as close to $4.94 million as possible AND include a couple of AHL contracts on that can be demoted once the season starts to create some breathing room. For example Hagg and Straka who both have 925K cap hits.

- Feanor

Here's an example of Option 2. Once the season starts Hagg and Straka would be demoted, and Laughton would be recalled with Rinaldo as the 13th forward. Lauridsen could be the 7th defensemen.

FORWARDS
Brayden Schenn ($2.500m) / Claude Giroux ($8.275m) / Jakub Voracek ($4.250m)
Jussi Jokinen ($4.000m) / Vincent Lecavalier ($4.500m) / Wayne Simmonds ($3.975m)
R.J. Umberger ($4.600m) / Sean Couturier ($1.750m) / Matt Read ($3.625m)
Pierre-Edouard Bellemare ($0.600m) / Michael Raffl ($1.100m) / Zac Rinaldo ($0.750m)
Petr Straka ($0.925m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Kimmo Timonen ($2.000m) / Braydon Coburn ($4.500m)
Mark Streit ($5.250m) / Nicklas Grossmann ($3.500m)
Andrew MacDonald ($5.000m) / Luke Schenn ($3.600m)
Chris Pronger ($4.941m) / Robert Hagg ($0.925m)
GOALTENDERS
Steve Mason ($4.100m)
Chad Johnson ($1.000m)

Well first Straka isn't a 4th line player as one of his knocks is his defensive play. He is a guy that has t play in top 6 and score.

I think the point of Iginla pushing either Jake or Simmer down in the lineup was that Iginla is a natural RW, not LW. Whether Iggy would sign here knowing he can play LW1 riding shotgun with Giroux and Jake, or play RW3 with Couts and Umberger, is another story.

Simmonds and Voracek would still be top 6 players if the Flyers acquired Iginla.
- MJL

How? All three are best suited at Right Wing.

Simmer has played LW before, both here and in LA. Read, Umberger, Bellemare, Raffl and Akeson can play either side, too.
