How do you make 3 million work when you need to get a back up goalie and probably another winger? I think the next move has to be Vinny so you can get your roster in shape before FA starts on July 1.
- J35Bacher

I think you can realistically get Boyle for 5 years and 11-12.5 million, cap hit of 2.2-2.5 million. Looking at his career numbers, I don't see him getting more than that

But the system was different when Vinny was signed. You have to factor that in. The direction changed. Vinny wanted to play in the run and gun style of Lavy. berube is structed d first with a commintment to puck supposrt
- J35Bacher

And the injuries, and the sub par season. A lot has changed since Lecavalier was signed.

No more five year deals for 3rd/4th liners, especially a guy who is three years removed from his career season.

That is a factor but I do think Holmgren and Hextall are different GMs with different views on players. If Holmgren is still GM I'd wager that Hartnell is still a Flyer regardless of the fit with Berube.

I am still hoping Hextall trades of one of Grossmann or L. Schenn. I would prefer Grossmann due to age/injuries. If the defense struggles, I would rather not see over the hill guys struggle, i'd rather see young guys who might be better next year because they struggled this year.

- Flyers_01

If you bring up players and they struggle, they might not be better the following year. They might be worse, and it might derail their career. Bring up players when they are ready to play in the NHL, not to struggle.

i threw dubnyk in there as a minimum backup...first name i saw. The original challenge was that you wont be able to sign boyle for three million and have room backup.

Correct. If Hextall and Berube are following kind of what LA does they won't put players in unless they know they are ready.

I would try to get Thomas Griess. Check out his numbers. Was a very solid back up and played well when Smith got hurt. And young

To be honest, I wouldn't be that upset to see him stay and given the right position and linemates for an extended period. I really don't think what we saw last year is indicative of the player that VL is now. While I don't expect him to blow anyone away anymore, I think he can and will be better than last year. Still don't think he's a great fit for Berube's system, but if he stays I believe he will be better than what we saw last year.
- funmaster18

For me, the issue with VL is simply total dollars and years against the cap combined with declining effectiveness. This was my same beef with Hartnell.

When I first heard about the Hartnell trade, I was very happy. I was also under the impression that Umberger made significantly less money and was a couple years younger than Hartnell.

I'm less happy about the trade now than I was yesterday, but I still think it was a good move.

The Flyers' problem isnt going to be scoring. After their early season struggles with the transition from Laviolette's system to Berube's system, they were able to put the puck into the net.

Their problem is keeping the puck out of their own net. Umberger is an improvement over Hartnell in that regards, and VL was pretty much a disaster at even strength last year.

He would be a nice back up. I'd consider him "middle-aged" as far as a goalie's career

Let's look at two of the biggest moves Holmgren made as a GM. Trading Richards and Carter. Would those deals be classified as for now, or for the future?

I doubt this works Cap wise. And you wouldn't even get a conversation started with the Niskanen camp for 4.25M. Try closer to 7M for Niskanen.

there are some who think he's getting 7.

I think that would be a gross overpayment, but the market is such that UFA defensemen do get grossly overpaid.
