I would trade both Schenns and more for Subban. But not for Bogo. It truly depends on the return and the direction the team is going in.

I would like to think Hextall looks long term and saw the potential cap crunch in two years. At that point, someone like Hartnell who has a good chance of losing a step and has a difficult contract to move might not fit into the long term plans.

Umberger is a player we like, his contract is shorter, and if we still need the space the buyout cap hit is something workable. Nothing more than that. I would expect them to think about a scenario like that before doing the deal.

So much changes on an NHL roster in two years. The Cap is going to continue to climb most likely. I don't think the Flyers in acquiring a player, looks to a future buyout as part of the reasoning for trading for a player. They won't hesitate to use that if necessary in the future. But I don't see it as part of why they traded for Umberger.
If Danny Briere continued to play at a level that justified his cap hit, would they have bought him out? Or if Bryzgalov played at a Vezina level, would they have bought him out? If Umberger plays well, they won't be buying him out.

Did you not hear that Columbus came after Hartnell

When Columbus offered, you have those discussions about Hartnell's future with the team.

The GM does not discuss player trades with the team. Maybe your captain..maybe. This is a business. I will miss Hartnell. But if it is true they came to him about the trade, his best intention was to take it. Due to when Umberger is in his last year, they can extend their kids.

I agree with that. I think it is very unlikely he is bought out. That being said, I want Hextall to think that signing the core players is the priority. You look at all trade scenarios through that lens.

Not a doubt in my mind that trade goes down. Obviously we need to add more, however, your would have the big 3 you need to build around: 1c, 1D, 1G.

Ok, yeah, I see what you are saying. Sometimes trades happen so fast though. I'm sure the first person who knew after Hexy got that call was Hartsy's agent.

“I wasn’t shopping Scott Hartnell,” Hextall said. “When I was circling around with the other managers, I said, ‘We need some cap relief here. If you can think of anything, let me know.' Columbus ended up coming hard after Scott.

“It didn’t give us a lot of cap relief, ironically. But it was a deal that I thought about for a few days before I went to Scotty’s agent because I realized he had a no-movement clause. It was a sensitive issue.”

Hartnell's cap hit is $4.75 million, while Umberger's is $4.6 million -- a total of $150,000 savings for the Flyers.

Hextall told Grillo the deal made sense for the Flyers in terms of moving forward with cap issues and years left on the contract, as well as adding more speed to the lineup.

“If you look at our team, we got a lot of guys in the next two or three years that are up,” Hextall said. “It’s kind of a far vision, but it’s reality. Two, three years from now, [Sean] Couturier, [Brayden] Schenn, [Braydon] Coburn, go down the list, Mason in three. It goes on and then our young defensemen will be up [on the roster] …”

According to Hextall, after he explained the rationale to Grillo, Hartnell called him.

“The one question he asked me was, ‘When did I fall out of favor?’” Hextall said. “I said, ‘No Hartsy, you haven’t fallen out of favor. This is just something that fits for us and we want to move forward with it.’

“To Scott’s credit and his agent’s credit, they were open to it, though it took them two days, which I had no problem with.”

It's a viable option they must have considered.
- Feanor

It's definitely part of the calculus when considering taking on any contract... you hope the player ends up productive and providing value, but you also have to acknowledge that there is a risk that they won't, and if so, identify your possible outs and their potential impact on your plans.

It would have to be a home run trade to move BSchenn at this point. LW is a clear weakness of the team and the system right now.

Hell, I'm not even so sure they move Vinny now because how weak LW will look if you slide Schenn to C.

I understand that, I'm just making a point to someone that the Schenns are not untouchable. Probably need to throw in 2 firsts. But that absolutely should be it. Even then, that is a lot. Maybe Schenns, Gost, and out first for Subban and Pacioretty

The key is any contract. The ability to buyout any contract is there. It's an option that every team has for any player. With that being said, does anyone honestly think when they were discussing acquiring Umberger, that part of the discussion was how do they get out of the contract? If I'm in the room and part of the hockey staff, I would say if your not sure enough about the player to be looking at how to get out of the deal, then maybe the deal shouldn't be made.

Ok, then I agree with your point. No one, but Giroux and Mason, should be untouchable when it comes to a proven number one defenseman. If they were unproven, then you start adding Voracek, Couts, Simmer, Morin, etc.
