I'm somewhat amazed by all the delusional thinking out loud going on here the past 24 hours. First, tons of people who day in and day out ragged on Hartnell go on huge whiny tirades about what a horrible move this is. And now people seriously think this move was made with the intention of buying Umberger out? I mean you don't seriously believe that, right?

The Flyers traded a good player who didn't fit their system and had a horrible contract for a decent player that fits their system and has a lesser term. I'm completely in awe of people bemoaning this trade. I don't know if it's an attachment to the personality, the belief that offense rules all(even when the player no longer fits the system), or what. All I know is I'm reading some really strange poop trying to rationalize a pretty simple trade.

Misses the point. Do you think when the Rangers signed Brad Richards they were thinking about buying him out however many years down the road? Or Flyers when they signed Briere or even Bryzgalov? I doubt very much that in internal meetings Hextall and his staff discussed buying Umberger out in the 3rd year of the deal, as part of their reasoning for making this deal. That is the point, and that is what SSTS is saying, that you say makes no sense, when it makes perfect sense. That is what he means by having a buy out attitude towards a player.
- MJL

The Flyers absolutely knew they could buy out Briere in the final two years of that contract; that's why Brian Burke and some other GMs were against those back-diving deals -- because either players could retire OR be bought out without the full weight of the AAV counting against them.

That was one of the biggest reasons for the lockout!

I for one despise they seem to be moving heavily toward a D first club.

If Hextall is tired of penalties . Rinaldo Rosehill and Downie all gone. Grossmann also could be gone. Simmonds could be traded

Again, misses the point. The Flyers know they can buy out any player. That it's in the CBA. The point is that they did not enter into the contract with the idea of buying him out in later years. And it was not in their thinking when they signed the deal. Same as buying out Umberger two years from now, was not part of the reason for making the deal.

In my opinion, Hextall talking about flexibility is about Umberger as a player, being more versatile. And with his deal two years shorter, that would allow them more flexibility cap wise down the road and help with issues such as tagging space a few years from now.
- MJL

His deal being two years shorter won't help them two years from now when these players will need new deals.

The Flyers are not looking to play any differently then any of the top teams in the League do. Such as LA, Chicago, St. Louis, Boston, etc.

Chicago is an aggressive team far from D first.

The outlier in the teams you posted imo.

If you think they play the same D first system as Boston, LA, and St. Louis by all means.

That's just your assumption. And if they do buy him out two years from now to free up $3m in cap space you will insist that it was never considered when he was traded for despite Hextall's repeated comments about gaining cap flexibility.

But the cap rising two more times between now and then certainly will. Not a guarantee obviously, but you cross that bridge when you come to it.

Any time Joel Quenneville is interviewed, he mentions taking care of the puck and their own end first, and then establishing a forecheck. They all play basically the same way. They want to play a 5 man unit, with puck support all over the ice. Play well defensively, have back pressure in the neutral zone, and forecheck hard. And there is nothing boring about it.

Yes it is my assumption, and it's a safe one. You or anyone else is free to assume that by mentioning cap flexibility, that means buying him out in 2 years. I think that is flawed thinking, and it has nothing to do with what he means with regards to cap flexibility.

How does everyone feel about Andre Benoit?

Decent mobility, not bad with the puck, and will probably be cheap. I know everyone prefers a righty, but I like how productive this and under the radar this guy is.

The fact is that four of the Flyers best players will be UFAs two years from now, and Pronger will still be on the books for another season.

That will likely change, some will be extended before that even matters.
