I don't get the correlation.

Jagr was phenomenal, he never needed to be a good captain. If Draisaitl is anything close to Jagr he should be our pick.

- sbroads24

Hahaha, agreed.

I guess if he isnt canadian, he won't know how to players how to be a sabre.

It all depends on how that compares to the other guys.

I would most certainly say that there have been better players than Jager that franchises have been built around. To name a few, guys like Doug Gilmore & Adam Oats.

But here's the other thing. Drisatil's isn't Jäger, Bennett isn't Gilmour, & Reinhart isn't Oats.

Miro Satan had 40 goals in a single season as a Sabre...

It didn't make him a great captain though.

We've seen it all before. I'll take my chances on a Canadian kid.

- SuperCat

Maybe...
But its not really fait to judge someone by such a small dampl size
And draisaitl was awesome against the usa

Our future captain is Latvian.

Doesn't matter where they are from.

Pavel Datsyuk and Niklas Lidstrom had teams built around then that did pretty well

I'll say it so 365 doesn't have to. Especially since the 2005 lockout, the teams that have won the Cup have been a super-majority of Canadians. They're still the guys to build franchises around, and still will be for the considerable future. Countries like the US are catching up, but it will still be another decade at the ver least, probably more, before Canadians are "unseated" in that regard.

The only key position I wouldn't look to Canada for right now is goaltender.

- buffalofan19

Good barometer to set for the franchise is to have at least two or three players who would be team canada worthy players. They don't necessarily have to be Canadian but if you have two or three guys of that ilk and a good supporting cast surrounding them you find yourself with a decent chance at the cup.

Sure, and if you really like the kid then just draft him.

But the Sabres had been stuck on North American players for quite some time.

Wonder if any of that sentiment still lingers?

If by stuck you mean against then I would agree. The last canadian born player they picked in the 1st round was Pysyk in 2010.

You're right, it really doesn't... But it has seemingly always been the general rule of thumb.

Who are the best players in the league today? Crosby, Stamkos, Doughty? Where are they from?

Who are the best players of All-Time? Orr, Gretzky, Howe? And where are they from?

What did "building a team" around Gilmour get anyone?

If we managed to get Reinhart and one of Virtanen/Dal Colle, I'd probably poop myself. That would be an incredible playmaker-sniper duo at center and wing.

I just mean from like 2007-2010 the Sabres entire drafts consisted of only guys from Canada & USA.

I'll take the guy from Ethiopia if he can score like Jagr.

We don't need the best captain, just the best player.

Fair enough but I don't think the recent run of euros is indicative of them going sour on NA's because of previous drafts, they've all been well justified picks

Armia was a talented scorer that fell to 16

Grigorenko fell to 12 and Zemgus is Zemgus

Ristolainen was BPA and they couldn't pass the chance to take Zadorov when he fell to 16

From the Sharks Board

I have a hunch Sharks trade #20 pick and Havlat to Buffalo for Erhoff and #61 pick.

StaziakAttack

I would be pretty happy with that. It would allow the sabres to move up even higher in the draft, if they packaged 20 with 31, 39. and/or 47, plus we'd have another rental in Havlat that we could move at the deadline.

or Ovie, Malkin, Sundin (i hate him), Selanne. But I would agree. Canada does have the higher percentage of greatness, but you can't discount players from around the world. As long as we don't draft another Zagapran (sp).

Ehrhoff to Detroit for a 1st rd pick?

Think Id rather just hang onto Ehrhoff.

He's got at least another 5 productive yrs in him, IMO. Those style of d-men tend to last into their late 30's (Timmonen, Zidlicky,Numminen).

Aren't those the years when the scouting budget was cut?
They prob stuck to NA players bc it was cheaper to actually scout them in person and they felt more comfortable with the picks that way
