Have to look at the pros and cons of the deal. If the trade is looked at strictly in terms of the trade, I think that Columbus got the better player. But the League has changed with the Cap, and the effect it has. Cap space now or in the future, is as asset for a team. The Flyers gained a few less years in term. That's on the Flyers side of the ledger. They also got a better skater, and defensive player. And also gained versatility. As well as gaining some discipline and got a player that will take less penalties. They probably gave up some goals, and some toughness. All the talk was about the Flyers becoming a better 5 on 5 team. Does this move help accomplish that? We have to see.

Hartnell on his number."I have a couple in mind. I don't want to take Mr. Johansen's No.19. But I'm going to say I want it so he feels bad."

I will miss this Hartnell.

MJL, better trade him then rather than have that kind of a talent on the third line behind Giroux and Schenn. Couter could easily adapt to the wing and still take a shift on the penalty kill with G. Couter need to develop his offensive game at this stage of his career, it will not happen on the third line. Umberger at 3C makes more sense than Umberger on line 1 or 2 at lw. Think out of the box once in awhile and it will do you good. If he remains at center he must at least get the #2C.

Im really not buying this couturier at wing thing man... Can you work on selling this a tad more?

You just nailed it with Umberger being a better defensive player, 3C for him and Couter a chance to be top six. As for Hartnell, you never knew if you were getting a great game or a horrible game and seriously his salary in the last 2-3 years of his contract would have been horrendous, good job Hexy and Homer.

Right on Marc, either way I am fine but Couter has to move into the top six somehow. If he does not start scoring soon he will never score and now is the time to give him the opportunity. Actually 2C with Schenn moving to lw makes a lot of sense. Both those guys need to step it up offensively.

There's no reason to move Couturier to Center. Call his the line the 3rd line or 5th line or whatever. If your point is that he needs to be used differently, rather then constantly getting unfavorable starts and always seeing tough match ups, in order to develop his offensive game, then I agree wholeheartedly. I think the kid is special, and I think the same instincts he shows defensively, are also there in the offensive side of the game. But it's hampered by how he's used. The best thing the Flyers can do is get better at 5 on 5 play, and get better as a team defensively, so they don't have to rely on Couturier in the role he's been in as much, due to giving them the best chance to win. But he's a center, and he should stay at center.

If they can move VL, I'd sign B. Boyle and go with:

Schenn-G-Jake
Read-Couturier-Simmonds
Umberger-Boyle-Akeson or Raffl
Bellemare-Laughton-Raffl or Rinaldo

I think we are pretty much on the same page then. I just do not want him thinking he a shutdown center primarily. He has the tools to do it at both ends. When his EL contract is up there is no way he is going to play for third line center salary. I think you will see the Flyers give him every opportunity to get it going offensively this year.
