Why? Who cares why they were signed? What I care about is what they offer to my team and what I would have to give up or could get for moving them. In this case, I do not think we got near enough. Making us a weaker team. Even if RJ works better for us, Hartnell was worth more. It's like trading a sports car for an SUV cause you just had your first kid. The SUV might fit your needs better, but the Sports car is worth more. I'm saying we left money on the table.

I agree that we left money on the table, was in fact think in the same terms of financial transactions. Like we traded 1 buck for 75 cents.

Bad analogy because you only get one car. We don't know that the deal made us a weaker team. We don't know what other moves the team is going to make. I think the length of Hartnell's deal affected his value in a trade.

With the shortened season in mind, Schenns goal totals are creeping up. I think he's gonna be a player that when he finally puts it all together will be fun to watch

Any idea why a Pro Hockey team with professional Pro scouts, and an experienced GM such as Hextall, would trade for a shot player?
- MJL

I am amazed at the vitriol directed at this trade. Did the Flyers get better? No. Did they get horribly worse? No.

They traded one or two goals, for 150k in cap space, two less years, more versatility, better defensive awareness, and about 20 LESS shorthanded situations.

Its not the end of the world.

Umberger is Couts new wing man. A third line of Read Coots Umberger looks pretty good to me.

And so far it looks that B Schenn is the new top line LW.

The sky has NOT fallen. Hartnell is not John Leclair. Umberger is NOT Geoff Sanderson.

With that logic no bad trade would ever be made and we know that isn't true. Be nice to people, it's funner and stuff.
- coffee junkie

The difference is that NHL teams don't have the benefit of hindsight. And a lot of things can contribute to a trade turning out bad, that are beyond a team's control

My basic point is if Umberger is a shot player, wouldn't Hextall and the Flyers pro scouting department know that?

Just got home ... just read about the Hartnell trade ... and just read all the posts on TSN, here and elsewhere about how Hexy just made the worst trade in NHL history.

Am I missing something here? When did Hartnell become this awesome player that we just gave away for nothing?

There is far too much content, and questions in this post for me to comprehend. Neanderthal that for me please.

I did neanderthal it. And don't worry about answering. The questions were rhetorical and answer themselves.

The fourth is kind of meh.

I think Luke is kind of a turd and if it wasn't for Grossmann's injury history Id rather keep him. Just me. Nutter me crazy.

I am very curious to see what the rest of the summer holds for this organization. A lot of changes in recent years.

- flyer_nutter

Unless they make a major multi-team deal for a stud D man, I think they are done outside of trying to move VL contract for a pick

What gave you an impression I would actually take those seriously and answer them?

I know the game bro. Just choose not to play. Feel free to think as you wish. I think its a poop trade.

Maybe he takes the 3rd line, freeing up Couts to play 2nd line with Simmonds & Read? Who knows?

I was here when the trade broke. The complete 180 from fans on Hartnell is flat out laughable.

I never said he was shot as some did and you are obviously just posting to them and not me here. However, he has serious injury issues and is showing more "signs" of break down the Hartsy. I agree with one poster that this is not the end of the world however it amazes me that some could actually claim we "won" this trade. I know you did not say we won it just that the full picture is not in focus yet. Fair point. I too will try to be more optimistic because it is pretty hard right now.

Rhetorical questions don't need to be answered. They answered themselves and effectively countered the points you made in your post. Such as assuming the deal was rushed. There is no basis for coming to that conclusion.
