Honestly, there has to be more coming.I really find it very hard that this is the "big" move we are making. Maybe they are going to keep Vl and play him 2C and Schenn Lw first line. Still, I get the feeling 2 more moves coming

Few thoughts:

Pros-
Umberger is a more versatile player, which gives them more flexibility.

Better skater and far more disciplined

Slightly smaller hit and less term

Cons-
Hartnell is a far better player in terms of possession.

Hartnell has significantly outscored Umberger over the past 3 seasons.

Hartnell is a viable option for 1st line winger. Not sure that Umberger is.

If Hartnell did indeed request a trade, I'm not sure Hextall could have done a ton better. Even if he hadn't, how much demand is there for Hartnell? I've heard plenty of people more than willing to move him.

It's not that he's being overvalued, I think it was probably in the flyers best interests to trade Hartnell.

But to get back Umberger, who is far worse nowadays, at the same salary for just a few less years makes no sense at all.

Somebody would have given up a 4th or 5th round pick to take a shot on Hartnell, if you wanted rid of him. No need to take back overpaid garbage for a useful player.

- TommyDeVito

I said the same thing. Would have been better off with just the pick. I don't like the return much but I don't think it's as bad a deal as some are making it out to be.

I can't be that crushed over losing a guy who can't skate.

THAT would have been a straight up salary dump, which I could have signed onto more easily than this. It gives you cap flexibility, which they Flyers are lacking.

If you HAD to take a player back, I would think it would have been a better/cheaper player than RJ Umberger.

- johndewar

I wonder if that is most of the sentiment -- Would most people have rather gotten just picks and cap space? I think this gives them a chance to complete the third line and see what B. Schenn can do on the first.

I don't get why people are saying we could have gotten so much better value for hartsy. yeah perhaps, but not without eating some of his salary and having even more cap space issues.

I don't think it overvalue or undervalue. i think it has to do with direction of team and roll. I liked Hartnell but I also know his limitations. he was a consistant 20 goal scorer who would trip over the blue line sometimes and take dumb penalties at terrible times. He was a good locker room guy and team guy. But a lot of his numbers came in offensive systems like Lavy's. The system is changing. It is more skating and defensivly sound. Not two words i describe with Hartnell. Also you get a deal two years shorter. We might not see value in Umberger but you weren't moving Hartnell to a team for a guy that cost 1million or was 23 years old. The deal works i think for both teams.

And for everyone who keeps syaing " well the 4th rounder is nothing" well it is an asset. Now at the deadline just say your in a great position to make a deal you have a little ammo. If you keep you can take ones of those flyer picks(no pun inteded) on a project player with potential. We want to build the system but it is not built with just 1st and 2nd rounders. You need to do your scouting and try to make that pick worht it.

Could be incentive to get Braydon Schenn to sign a bridge deal:

You have two seasons to prove you're a first line scorer with two of the best forwards in the world.

Make us have to pay you.

I think you are being too soft on Hexy here. Don't forget, the same logic of how much trade value did we have if he requested a trade is the same logic as RJ has no trade value because he has PUBLICLY (even less value) requested a trade. I appreciate the Pros and Cons but I find it very difficult to argue that this was a good hockey trade. I would give this a D+/C- at best.

A question to everyone else- what letter grade would you give Hexy's first trade? Sure it is too early to tell but giving it a grade now allows you to look back on it and reflect on how you felt in a tangible way in the future.

They weren't going to be able to trade his salary for nothing. And we got a pick for Hartnell's extra contract years. Beats giving one up.

I think this means we should expect another forward moved out of the line-up. Who that is? Only Hexy knows.

It's like Hartnell demanded a trade only to Columbus
