Thats what it will be like. Hartnell has his problems, but he still produces points and gets poop done.

Umberger IS NOT a top 9 forward imo. If they don't move VL, they'll have a $10M 4th line.

- PhillySportsGuy

honestly, i thought hartnell was headed for a demotion from the top lines anyway.

so now youll at least have a 10M fourth line for less years.

maybe they really actually did want umberger back. who knows. but if it was purely a salary deal, then the illusions of vinny yielding some legitimate assets need to be banished for good.

If they traded Hartnell because he didn't fit, there is no way they are keeping VL.

If you think the return on Hartnell was poor just wait for the VL deal.

So some plead patience with the team and whatnot... well I think here's a deal that will require a few years to play out to see what happens. Revisit this deal in 3-5 years when we'll see how the Hartnall money is spent then. Want to "build" a team to win a few years from now? These are the kinds of deals that may need to be made IMO.

I'm not sure I'll frankly miss the dumb penalties and such. Hartnall has a great personality and all, but maybe he's sitting around at practice and just not "getting" what the coaches are preaching. As a guy who just couldn't figure out how to not take dumb penalties (or stay on his skates hahaha really funny), it wouldn't surprise me. Tell Schenn he's permanently playing LW with Claude Giroux, keep his stick down, he'll score 30 goals and get $$$ in the future.

To be honest.. I dont remember seeing Hartnell start on the 4th line.

The emergence of Simmonds, paired with the length of his contract... writing on the walls.

Im not bitter about this. I see Hexy going with the younger guys and trying to be more responsible defensively... I just hope Umberger can still bring it. Crazy, considering he was one of the strongest candidates for a buy-out.

- jak521

I feel RJ is better leader to have on the ice for our younger guys to look up to. Hartsy was a punk compared to RJ

I think they're worse today than they were in game 7 against the Rangers. I don't think this will have a lasting, 3-year effect. Schenn and Coots will get better, younger defenseman will take the spots of Grossman, etc. And I have a feeling Hextall realizes that this move alone makes them a worse team and he'll likely make a subsequent move in the summer to make them a better team.
- steelydan

I'm not saying the team won't get better, but I think this deal is a net loss for the next 3 years.

just cause he couldn't beat out Jared Boll for 4th line minutes doesn't mean ...

wait I think you have me on this one

I think it was a good time to move on from Hartnell.
Could they have made a better trade? Probably but who knows.

I am OK with it.

Feel bad for MOAT, I know he loved Hartsy.

- Marc D

MOAT will bounce back as long as we keep Simmonds.
If Simmonds goes too there will be a great deal of hair tearing and gnashing of teeth from Angry Town.

I think the term power forward cant be applied to a player who cant stay on his skates during scrums along the boards. I enjoyed a lot of Hartnells time here, but, perhaps he is better labelled something else
- Steelmanpa

Funny how people can only focus on that.

Poor guy is such a terrible skater, cant win a battle on the boards, yet somehow managed to score a point in 2/3 of the games he played in as a Flyer. His skating issues were more comical then problematic.

I guess I just don't feel the gap in performance between the two is really that wide... numbers are definitely in Hartsy's favor, no doubt.
- Tomahawk

I guess I see as a larger gap than you.

I think B Schenn is now the #1 LW, at least for the moment.

I could see an argument for Read too, but not sure he works as well as Schenn.

Its a lateral move. A little less cap, a little less years, a little less goals, for more versatility.

Its not the end of the world. Some acting as if we just traded John Leclair or something.

i still think the best course for schenn is give him his 2 year deal around 3 mill or so. make him the second line center with jake on his wing, and leave him the hell alone for at least like a 30 game sample size.

Hartnell would be demoted from the 1st to 2nd line. Umberger was demoted from the 4th to scratch line.

So did anyone else hear Craig Button call Scott Laughton Peter Forsberg light last night on NHL Tonight? He said he's ready for the NHL this season. He also said Morin is improving by leaps and bounds and is fast tracking towards an NHL job.

I know. We'll be getting an even less effective player, making the same amount for 1 less year.
