Attention advanced stats guys:

What do the stats say about Umberger Vs Hartnell?

Is this Hexy using advance stats in a trade to "upgrade" the team?

Yeah, I think he had the names switched around.

I'm not even sure if I would have been happy with VL for Umberger. This deal is just terrible.

Kind of blown away by this, because I can't possibly see how Umberger is superior to Hartnell in every facet of the game.

we can't buy hartsy or anyone out. we used our two. why don't people get that!
- arichardson22

I think he means a regular buyout, not a CBO.

I can't rationalize this on what we know. Maybe Hartnell begged for a trade. Maybe the Flyers wanted him gone. Maybe....just maybe.

Bye hartsy i will be one of those that misses ya. I'll never forget how you smashed out sean avery, stood up to paul gaustad, took. Slash to the ankle and got up to score a goal in the finals. A true flyer through and through.

As for this trade it makes little sense but hopefully umberger is invigorated playing back here. For now ill keep hoping im wrong about the good ol'boy club of the front office.

We have no compliance buyouts. Doesn't mean we can't use regular buyouts. I wouldn't want to, but we do have that ability.

This is a huge lift off #CBJ GM Kekalainen. Club was contemplating a compliance buyout on Umberger if they couldn't move him before draft.

WE JUST TRADED A 30 goal scorer for a player about to be bought out

No mention that he barely scratched 20 this year riding G's coattails and a ridiculous amount of PP time...

I'm not really upset Hartnell is gone, but I would have preferred they bought him out instead of wasting time bringing Umberger back. I would rather have that money free to do other stuff, then waste it on Umberger.
- PLindbergh31

Well I'm sure they exhausted those options. Fact is they were'nt finding a team to dump 5 years of Hartnell on for a draft pick in return. They get themselves out of the final two years, where honestly there would have been zero chance to ever move him and they get a good all around player in return.

Just wait until you see Umberger play. You'll be pining for Hartnell
- PhillySportsGuy

I've seen him, neither player excites me. Hartnell is not a #1 winger anymore, he lost his spot to Raffl who has severe difficulty scoring goals but is pretty good otherwise. Hartnell had trouble with one timers on the PP this season. His decline is going to be hard and fast. I think Umberger fits a third line wing role better then Hartnell, or they have another move in the works.

I will miss Hartnell's personality and his antics. Throwing his glove at a breakaway is in my top moments ever.

No salary retention for either team in CLB/PHI trade...clean break both ways

Well, there went that hope.

- dilbert719

Well, I'll give Hextall credit for one thing.....if you're gonna trade a popular player (and Hartnell is well-liked), make it your first move while you still have the personal capital to do so.

Not really. The draft and July 1st are fast approaching.

I'm sure you love this transaction like you do every other. Flyers just traded a player they play on their top line, for a guy who was a healthy scratch in the playoffs.

- PLindbergh31

And I could reply with I'm sure you'll hate it and reply negatively, but where would that get us? What I'll do is look at it objectively, and come to an unbiased opinion. I'm still processing it, but two initial thoughts I have is that I don't think this makes the Flyers a better team. And that I think this is one move of the Summer, and there are going to be other things to come.

It's a bright side for local sportswriters: They get to recycle and update stories on Umberger. DID YOU KNOW HE WAS A PENS FAN GROWING UP?

Umberger was a healthy scratch and makes $4.6M over the next 3 seasons. Coaches don't continually scratch effective, veteran players.

Have you watched Umberger over the last few years?
Guy was scratched for the most important game of the BJ"s entire franchise history!

- Whiskey-Tango

Ok? A microcosm in both players careers. One playoff series. Big whoop.

I've watched enough of both players to know what I'm talking about. I'm cool with it.
