I don't mind the Hunter Smith pick...heardlots talk of this kid on the Fan960 leading up and seeing how he's progressing is very promising for a guy his size
you never know, he might become nothing more than a giant pylon if he doesn't work more on his skating but he realizes that.
he went something like 140th to 36th on central scouting within this year

I have never heard of this goalie and it's a head scratcher mainly because it's a high 2nd rounder....goalies are hit and miss and we've got some good goalies in the pipelines. Hurts even more knowing McKeown was still around

I agree. I'm ok with the Smith pick at #54. According to Adam French's timeline of working with him, he should be ready to join the Flames along with Janko in 5 years

Choosing a goalie was a little curious, but I guess we have to have some faith in our scouts who have got us Seiloff, Wotherspoon, Gillies, Gaudreau, Baert, Poirer and Klimchuk in the last few years. He was rated as the #2 goalie, and considering all of the goalies that went after him he would not have been available at 54.

I don't mind choosing Smith at all, 6'7, made huge strides in his progression this year. Could be one of those guys that really progresses once he gets used to his big body. There must be a reason Mckeown slipped to 50, I'm gonna trust the scouts.

Yea, I'm curious about why McDonald over Demko but you know the Flames brass would have had a pretty good read of Demko by watching Johnny and Arnold all year.

Still have no clue why they' take a goalie at all in the early rounds. Unless he pans out as a #1, his trade value will never be very high.

Pissed we didn't get a good right shot D man like Glover or McKeown. Must be some issues with Mc though considering how far he fell.

Anybody at all curious to see Hunter Smith line up against Keegan Kanzig at rookie camp? While I don't really want to see the team mates go at it, it would be one hell of a heavy weight tilt.

I'd love to see these two spend some time with McGrattan just to learn how to handle themselves in the big league. Granted the Flames may expect more out of the whole game of these kids, but there isn't really anybody better to show them the ropes in that area of the NHL.

The Flames may not have the giant centers of some of the other western conference teams. But if they have Smith or Kanzig on the ice backing them up it will become a whole different story.

hahaha did anyone catch Hunter Smith's media scrum?
he said his uncle didn't play for the Flames when someone asked him about it....even though his uncle did play for the Flames lol

- cpltanto

Is his uncle the Smith who enjoys long walks on the beach, Stephen King books and scoring on his own net in big games?

I am and I find it pathetic that neither one of them can take the time to weigh in on the draft. It's the frigging draft ffs. Teams like ours Jeropotato, especially yours, live for this time of year. Perhaps I should take over the Flames blog myself. If I could type worth a damn I would. I don't mean to ruffle any feathers but come on guys we are starving here.

I am totally stoked about Hunter Smith being picked. His progression was incredible & he skyrocketed up the ratings. Kid has great hands & has an excellent chance of not just being a 4th line enforcer. Everyone searches for that elusive Lucic clone & to me, considering we got him for Berra. I like it. If he develops more offense, we have our hockey linebacker patrolling a line for Bennett & Gaudreau.

I scratched my head about Macdonald as well but if you see this kids interview, he comes across as a very impressive young man. Keep in mind, after Ortio & Gilles, Flames have very little in the goaltender pipeline & there are no guarantees they both come up & become studs. So Goaltending is an organizational need & this kid has impressed our scouts enough to make sure they got him with that 34th pick. Too soon?? Well look at the # of goalies that went right after ours. Look at the Canadiens taking Fucale with our 36th pick last year. You'll be liking this pick when he leads our Canadian jrs to gold next year.

Nice pick up on Bollig. He brings a champion background to our young dressing room. Imagine him showing his 2 Stanley Cup rings to our young guys. I like it. Probably means Wesgarth wont be getting resigned & I kinda liked him. But with Mcgrats, Wolf & Van B in the fold, let's see what happens at camp.

I guess looking more into this the kid plays on a bad team....when he played for Canada he was lights out and was the goalie MVP when the team was a bit more stacked
liking this kid more and more
